About Patrick

As a robotics engineer, with my doctorate from CMU's Robotics Institute, I use math every day in my designs, analyses and software. Throughout my career I've always enjoyed helping my fellow co-workers or student interns learn and understand difficult mathematical and engineering concepts. People have told me I have a knack for explaining complicated topics in simple terms. Now as a father of two young boys, I very much enjoy helping them with their math homework and watching as the light comes on in their eyes when they finally grasp a concept.

Along with my experience applying math in the "real world", I have also taught and lectured in graduate school as well as given short seminars on various math and engineering subjects at my workplace. I have also created materials and provided training courses to science and technology teachers on how to use robotics to teach math and science.

A good teacher should help guide their student to the right location, but not tell them exactly what to see. That is my philosophy. Through questions and simple exercises, I can give a student a nudge in the right direction, but leave it up to them to find what they are looking for and understand the concept in their own way.

I encourage students who are struggling with pre-algebra, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, pre-calc or calculus to contact me to learn more. My schedule is highly flexible and I look forward to working with you to improve your math skills.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

As a robotics engineer, with a doctorate in robotics from CMU, I use math every day in my designs, analyses and software, especially algebra. I can use that to explain how math is used in the real world and provide motivation to the students. I am very patient and have a knack for explaining complicated topics in an easy-to-understand way.

Algebra 2

Mathematics, especially algebra, is a key skill to have for any scientist or engineer. As a robotics engineer, with a doctorate in robotics from CMU, I use algebra every day in my work and can help your child understand how it can be used in the "real world." I have been told I have a knack for explaining complex topics in simple terms, and I can work with your student at his or her own pace until they grasp the subject material.

Calculus

Just the word "calculus" can be very intimidating, but it doesn't have to be. As a robotics engineer, with my doctorate in from CMU, I use calculus every day in my job and can help your child understand it too. I have been told I can explain complicated topics in simple terms, and as long as your child understands a few basic rules, they can excel, and not struggle, with calculus.

Geometry

Geometry is something that is used everywhere, not just in science or engineering. As a robotics engineer, with a doctorate in robotics from CMU, I use geometry every day in my software design and development. I can use that to help your child understand how math and geometry is used in the real world and provide motivation to the students. I am very patient and have a knack for explaining complicated topics in an easy-to-understand way.

Prealgebra

Knowing algebra is an important skill for everyday life, not just science or engineering. As a robotics engineer, with a doctorate from CMU, I use basic mathematical and pre-algebra concepts all the time and can help your child better understand how and why they are used. I am very patient and have been told I have a knack for explaining complicated subjects in an easy-to-understand way.

Precalculus

Precalculus and analytical geometry can seem overwhelming at first, but they don't need to be and are vital skills to have for any future scientist or engineer. As a robotics engineer, with a doctorate from Carnegie Mellon, I use precalculus and analytical geometry concepts every day, and can show your child how they are used in the "real world." I am very patient and can explain complicated topics in an easy-to-understand way.

Trigonometry

Trigonometry is used in just about every field of science and engineering. As a robotics engineer, which a doctorate from Carnegie Mellon, I used trigonometry every day as it is one of the main building blocks for a lot of software and technology. I can help your child understand how trigonometry is used in the "real world", and can work at your child's own pace until trigonometry doesn't seem so scary.
