About Danielle

I first realized that I had a knack for tutoring in high school when I was volunteering with at risk youth in Pittsburgh. I have continued to tutor and teach throughout my life in every country in which I have lived because of the connection it gives me with others and the feeling of satisfaction when I can shed light on something that was previously hazy and unclear.

Always providing new perspectives on a subject matter, I have taught English to Japanese adults, writing to college athletes, SAT prep to Kaplan students and newly arrived Korean-American kids, French and Spanish language to middle schoolers, and elementary functions/trigonometry to high school students. I feel their successes as if they were my own.

Generally, we will spend the first session diagnosing your problem areas, each of which we will address systematically in subsequent lessons even as new material is introduced. I end each lesson with 'things to work on' and start each lesson with a review to note any progress. The lessons are tailored to your pace and ability so you never feel overwhelmed, or I am not doing my job.

I prefer to work weekdays between 9am and 4pm but can take the occasional weekend student. I can travel to meet you and prefer to meet at local libraries, if possible. My rate is $60/hour and ask that any cancellations be provided the evening before the scheduled lesson.

I hope you will be in touch if you have any questions about me, my methodology, or schedule. I look forward to working together to ensure your academic and professional success!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 2

I studied high level math including BC calculus, linear algebra, and differential equations at Rice University and have always had a passion for playing with numbers. I have been a math tutor since high school and later went on to complete the Kaplan training as an SAT tutor. I have taught SAT Math at Kaplan and privately tutored in pre-algebra, algebra I and II, geometry, trigonometry, elementary functions, and pre-calculus to scores of high school and college students in Houston, Washington, and Pittsburgh. This experience equips me with strategies both for problem-solving and for test-taking.

English

I worked as an English tutor and writing advisor for the Rice University Owl Writing Center for four years, serving as the senior writer and manager for the last two years. The Center helped a range of students - from incoming freshmen learning how to write at the college level to graduate students needing assistance with technical papers. Following my work with Georgetown MSFS Admissions, I advised both high school and graduate applicants on writing compelling, effective essays. Finally, my years teaching English as a Second Language (ESL) and Kaplan SAT English equip me with a solid command of vocabulary, grammar rules, reading strategies and how to teach them.

ESL/ESOL

Following college, I moved to Japan and taught English as a Foreign Language to Japanese middle school students and, in the evenings, to adult learners at the community center. When I returned to the U.S., I continued to teach EFL/ESOL to Japanese exchange students and later to teach SAT Verbal and Writing to Korean high schoolers recently arrived in the U.S. I also taught English and culture to Somali refugees living near Washington, D.C. to facilitate their adjustment to life in the U.S. Finally, I regularly practice English with Colombian immigrants trying to improve their fluency.

I have been a math tutor since high school and later went on to complete the Kaplan training as an SAT tutor.
