Allegheny College (English)
University of Pittsburgh (MEd)
As a lifelong reader and writer, I have loved working with students of all ages in both one-on-one capacities and as a high school English teacher. I graduated from Allegheny College magna cum laude with a degree in English and an award for writing the best senior thesis in the English department. At the University of Pittsburgh, I graduated with a 4.0 and a M.Ed. in secondary education English.
Though I am taking my talents in close reading, writing, editing, and public speaking to the corporate sector and "graduating" after ten years in tenth grade, I am excited to continue to work one-on-one with learners. I have tutored students in elementary school through university level, targeting writing, research, and test prep. I was the only English teacher in my school district responsible for preparing students for the Keystone Exam in Literature, and in one year I raised proficiency from 79% to 93%. I am extremely focused on results and work best with students when we can have an honest dialogue about goals and expectations.
I have some foolproof "tricks" my writers have benefited from to polish their writing, turning run-on sentences into sophisticated, polished prose. I also have measurable results in helping student improve their scores on exams like the SATs, particularly the reading, writing, and grammatical sections.
I look forward to meeting you to discuss your learning needs! In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
As a teacher of public speaking, I worked with high school students who were largely terrified to be freshmen at all, let alone freshmen in a course that would require them to speak in front me and their peers! I am an expert in providing speakers with techniques that will mitigate their nerves and bolster their confidence. Public speaking was my greatest fear for much of my youth, and since I managed to turn this weakness into a pronounced strength, I know how to motivate students who are as fearful as I once was.
