About Ben

Hey, everyone!

Throughout my adult life, I feel I have demonstrated a great commitment to learning, and, more importantly, to helping other people learn. During my college years, I worked as VP of scholarship for my fraternity Sigma Phi Epsilon, helping my fellow brothers who were struggling with their classes or just providing friendly advice. After graduation, I worked with Teach for America, teaching high school students the ins and outs of biology and chemistry. It was here that I learned to really develop and hone my skills working with other people in an educational environment. Certain topics don't come easy to everyone, and that's okay! I strongly believe everyone can learn with the right resources and the right help, and I'd be honored to help anyone in their studies where I can.

My experience is primarily in the college sciences, e.g., chemistry, biology, biochemistry, etc., but I also have extensive experience in writing essays for humanities courses, being a former history major as well. And for those looking to go to medical school, I would love to help anyone in their MCAT studies. I'm personally a fan of the self-study approach and have a good sense of what resources are most useful for the new edition of the exam. Likewise, I can help in designing study plans and telling you where to invest your money in terms of books and practice exams.

I have taken the current 2015 edition of the MCAT with a total score of 519, with subscores of 128 in Chemical and Physical Foundations of Biological Systems, 129 in Critical Analysis and Reasoning Skills, 132 (perfect score) in Biological and Biochemical Foundations of Living Systems, and 130 in Psychological, Social, and Biological Foundations of Behavior.

My current rate is $45 an hour in person and $30 an hour for online sessions, but I am willing to negotiate based on circumstances.

Please feel free to contact me at your best convenience. My schedule is relatively flexible, especially during the weekday hours. I look forward to meeting you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Genetics

Genetics is often considered to be one of the most daunting upper-level biology courses, but it doesn't need to be. In my experience, the key to proper genetics understanding is problem-solving practice. Much like most math courses, genetics is a subject that takes devoted effort to master. Having received an A in a genetics course at the University of Pittsburgh, as well as leading study groups as a student instructor, I know what it takes to succeed in this subject and can provide ample example problems that I can work on with students. I will show you how genetics can be fascinating and fun!

MCAT

As an aspiring medical student, I feel I am in excellent position to help students succeed on the MCAT. I especially feel that taking full-length practice exams and subsequently reviewing mistakes is key to triumph on test day. I have also worked with prospective medical students one-on-one in the past with designing action plans for success, tailored for individual needs. As for me, I feel my personal MCAT knowledge and experience will set you up excellence, having scored a 519 (98th percentile) on the exam myself. I know how difficult this exam can be for newbies, but it doesn't need to be with proper insight and guidance. I can provide that.

Organic Chemistry

Organic chemistry is a subject that appears foreboding at first, but, in order to do well, students simply need to develop a deep appreciation for its driving concepts, which I emphasize as a tutor. Following my strong performance in the subject as part of my college major, I've worked with several undergraduates and I've found that the key to success in this subject is mastering the general principles regarding electronegativity and electron movement before memorizing the dozens upon dozens of mechanisms and reactions needed for exams. In this way, I set students up for success throughout their exams and lab work.

Zoology

Zoology is a fascinating subject and one that is incredibly informative for those students looking to pursue medicine or other careers in the health sciences. So much of what we know about human anatomy and physiology is based on model organisms. As a former teacher's aide in vertebrate morphology, I help students in designing quizzes and self-study plans to master the concepts of animal anatomy, activity, and evolution.
