About Michael

I'm a tutor with a deep passion for teaching. While my crowning achievement would definitely be the comprehensive Science Fiction and Fantasy Literature class I constructed from the curriculum up and have had the privilege of teaching at Carnegie Mellon University for the past three years, I have a further five years of in-classroom experience instructing groups of up to 30 students across several disciplines from pre-K through high school levels.

More than that, I have a further three years of experience tutoring in both classroom and at home settings across all levels in disciplines including English (primary school-AP English and composition, including ESL), composition, literature, reading comprehension, study skills, psychology, linguistics, and Japanese through intermediate levels among many other things. I also have a specialty in college and graduate level admission statement composition, with over three years guiding students from planning to polish on admissions statements.

I am an avid reader, it's what first sparked my love for writing, and as such drove me to study English and creative writing at the undergraduate level. As a tutor it is my personal mission to find what excites you most about learning and life, and find a way to work that into your education in order to personalize it. For me, this means choosing texts, topics, or relating to material you might like, so I can extend a small part passion for English and literature to you.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

College Counseling

College counseling and the production of holistic college application portfolios is one of my areas of expertise. I have aided students through this wonderful rite of passage from selection of schools through standardized testing, development of a resume, curation of essays and final application materials submission for over six years. I would be happy to share this experience with your student.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have over ten years experience providing comprehensive support to k-6 students, both in classroom as a k-8th science teacher, and in home as a comprehensive tutor centralizing all of their educational concerns in one professional. My students benefit not only from my wide range of expertise in subjects but also through being able to cultivate an warm academic relationship with one individual and develop the trust so vital to continuing educational support. I enjoy being able to pivot from subject to subject and bridge their interest in one discipline in order to extend their understanding and interest to other disciplines that they may be encountering difficulties in.

Homeschool

I have over 6 years of experience teaching in an in-home setting. I also have 3 years of experience developing specialized curriculum to address particular student needs. In addition to that I have 4 years of experience teaching in a classroom setting which provides me familiarity not only with common core and various expectations for learning achievement at particular ages but gives me a firm grasp of classroom and student management over extended periods of time as one sees in a homeschool environment.

Phonics

I have 5 years of experience aiding students in need of help with learning to read or improving their reading skills understand the phonics that are instrumental the process. I have worked at all levels with these students and have experience, too, with students who may be experiencing some difficulty from learning differences such as dyslexia. More than that, with a degree in linguistics, I am well versed in phonetics which governs the underlying mechanics of phonics.

Political Science

I have an undergraduate focus in political science. I have also written extensively about the internal mechanics of political science for my thesis work and have over 3 years of experience teaching students the nuances of political science.

Social Studies

I've tutored students in social studies for over 3 years. I have extensive coursework in US, European, and World history. In addition I have 5+ years of experience in tutoring students in test taking strategies especially where it concerns social studies, the development of civilizations, and government and politics.

Study Skills

I have had extensive training in and experience working with students who require help in honing their organization and study skills, whether they be on the executive function disorder spectrum or simply in need of a little direction. In addition to per-subject guidance I help these students with calendaring, organization and accountability. I also offer the option to the families to have me liaise with the various professionals in their learning environments to give the student a comprehensive support network.
