Fordham University (English)
Writing papers, reading short stories, essays, articles, and novels, learning new vocabulary, and talking about literature were some of my favorite parts of school (and are still my favorite things to do now that I'm done with school!), and I'd be honored to share my love with anyone and everyone.
It is so satisfying to watch someone make that spark of connection when they learn something new or master a skill that has been difficult for too long. While I haven't officially tutored anyone for a profit, I have years of experience helping my peers, family, and friends with reading and writing assignments along with vocabulary tests, comprehension quizzes, presentations - basically anything English related! Even as a kid, I loved that feeling of helping others become more confident in their ability to speak, write, read, and learn.
My goal with each student is to help him/her/them with their regular assignments, but delve deeper than a teacher can in the limited amount of time they spend with individual students. If it is necessary to provide extra homework, I will assign some, but I am of the opinion that too much homework can be both overwhelming and foolish. Kids are already weighed down with assignments in other subjects, extracurricular activities, sometimes jobs, and all sorts of other things, and I'd much rather focus on quality, not quantity. I will also not test students incessantly or harshly grade them in any way because I don't think it's necessary or beneficial to place higher emphasis on a grade than on the actual material. Instead, I'd like to foster an appreciation for the written word by sharing my own excitement and passion. Depending on the assignment, I will do my best to play up each individual student's strengths. For example, some students might excel in art and visual representations of words, definitions, etc. and with those students, I will make sure to incorporate drawing, painting, music, and anything else to make the learning process work for them. For other students, athletics might be their skill, and I'm willing to play catch, pass a soccer ball around, or even play basketball (even though I'm not so skilled there, I do know how to play Horse). I will do just about anything to make sure each student gains confidence in their ability to articulate themselves through language and understand the nuances of writing and literature.
I will be available to begin tutoring August 8th, and am available any time - weekdays, weekends, mornings, afternoons, nights...all of the above. While I can meet for lessons online, I would much prefer working in person, preferably in the student's home environment, but a coffee shop, library, or park will do as well. It really depends on the student's needs. Please feel free to contact me to set up a meeting either on the phone or in person to see if I am the right tutor for the job!
