University of Pittsburgh (Enrolled)
In December 2014, I graduated from Penn State University with an undergraduate degree in Childhood and Early Adolescent Education (PreK-4) and a certification in English as a Second Language (K-12). I am currently a graduate student at the University of Pittsburgh and am working to obtain my Reading Specialist certification (K-12) and my Master's in Reading Education. I have worked for both Uniontown School District and Cornell School District. I have instructed students of various backgrounds and have worked with students ranging from kindergarten to adult.
Throughout my education at Pitt, I have become extremely knowledgeable about different strategies to teach grammar and reading skills to my students.
Over the past 5 years, I worked in many school districts across the state. All of the school districts that I have worked in have used the Common Core State Standards. Therefore, I am very familiar with the standards at each grade level and subject.
I strongly feel that my educational background in reading has made me a highly qualified phonics instructor.
Again, my experience as a reading specialist has given me extra insights into how to teach spelling strategies to struggling students. These strategies can be used for all ages.
If you would like to set up a meeting with me to get to know me and to learn more about my qualifications and experience, please do not hesitate to contact me! In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Throughout my undergraduate and graduate trainings, I have taken many courses on how to effectively teach phonics and how to use phonics strategies. Many of my graduate preparation courses have focused on phonics instruction. In addition, I have worked in a kindergarten classroom and 2nd grade classroom and have also worked as a reading specialist intern. These experiences have provided me with endless opportunities to teach phonics to students of all ages.
