About Rebecca

I have over 15 years as a writer and editor, and have been teaching English writing, vocabulary, and spelling in classrooms and online for the last 8 years. I won an Award of Excellence from the Society of Communications for the textbook that I wrote for the class. I'm currently working on a Certificate in Instructional Design from Rollins College.

I received a Blossom Arts Scholarship from Kent State University, where I received a B.A. in art history and anthropology; and graduated magna cum laude from the University of Pittsburgh where I earned another B.A., this one in English writing. I'm also a published author, with fiction and poetry published in a number of literary magazines, three books, and three anthologies.

I come from a long line of writers, beginning with my great grandfather, who was also an editor and a writer. Having grown up overseas from the time I was 7 years old (Democratic Republic of Congo; Kenya; Katanga; Nigeria; Istanbul, Turkey; Fulda, Germany; Brussels, Belgium; and Sao Paulo, Brazil), I fell in love with languages--especially English.

In all of my teaching and tutoring, I use the student's background, experience, and personal interests to build trust and to motivate. I use hands-on, creative exercises so the student can see how what he/she learns can be used in every day life. I also use learning games. Learning can be fun! In fact, research shows that when a person enjoys learning, their retention goes up by 30%.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
