My name is Nickie and I live in the Greenfield sector of Pittsburgh, PA. I hold a Bachelor of Science Degree in Environmental Science from Texas Christian University and an Elementary Education Teaching Certificate from the University of Pittsburgh. I have worked with children and middle school aged students in various settings for 26 years. From 1998-2005 I assisted the Special Education Teacher in a Learning Support Classroom that was part of the Pittsburgh Public School System. Spanning the years of 2005-2015 I ran my own childcare business taking care of young children in their homes, planning developmentally appropriate activities and attending to their cognitive, social, emotional and physical needs.
My area of concentration is Math and Science but I also enjoy and am qualified to teach Reading. I feel I can make the greatest impact and attain the most efficient results working one on one and face to face with a student. Meeting a student where he or she is and attending to the unique individual learning styles and abilities of each student is paramount. I prefer the library or home environment as these settings are quiet and conducive to studying.
I am an outstanding Elementary Math tutor as I have a very strong math background and foundation. I taught the Everyday Math Program to Special Needs students for seven years in the Pittsburgh Public School System. I have an innate ability to break math concepts down into small easily digestible steps which reduces anxiety. Once anxiety about math is eliminated teaching can begin and a love of math and its practical applications can be instilled. My experience at this level carries through to Pre-Algebra and Algebra I as I am able to help a student master earlier learned skills and build on these skills to reach goals set for the Middle School and Junior High School math courses.
I am an outstanding Reading and Writing tutor as I have taken methods courses in these areas to obtain my Elementary Education Teaching Certification. I taught Reading and Writing to the Special Needs students with which I worked. I write as a hobby and have attended for nine years and am still attending a weekly creative writing group at my local library. I have facilitated the group a number of times.
I am an outstanding Elementary Education Teacher as I have the training and experience needed to work with this age group. I am a very meticulous, conscientious and organized person which is conducive to teaching in a concrete and structured manner. I am an excellent planner and time manager but am also flexible and love input from the students.
I encourage students to contact me any day of the week from 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM. I look forward to hearing about student needs so I can plan and put into practice a fun and rewarding program of study to build skills and confidence.

For Prealgebra and Algebra I, I would like my rate to be $40 per hour
Nickie is currently working with my 3rd grade twin daughters. She's helping us overcome confidence & stumbling blocks within Reading & Language Arts.
My daughters are EXCITED about our sessions with Nickie. Prior to this, they would dread reading. I'm so thankful I found her.
Nickie did an amazing job of showing Taylor concrete examples of subtraction using blocks and even body parts from Taylor's Cootie game! Nickie is very creative in her approach and has the remarkable ability to use use circumstances and surroundings to her advantage. Taylor is quickly learning math concepts that she struggled with most of the year in first grade. I recommend Nickie whole heartedly- she is excellent!
Nickie is very patient and takes the time to learn his needs and he really enjoys working with her as Nickie continues to tutor I believe he will be able to read
After finishing his first tutoring lesson with Ms. Nickie, my son was so excited and happy about learning! I was so worried that he would be upset since we are doing summer tutoring and not be engaged, but Nickie was so great and made it so fun for him! The moment the session ended, he said he couldn't wait to go to tutoring again! I am confident that this summer with Nickie will prepare my son for the 4th grade reading level!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have a Bachelors Degree in Environmental Science which includes courses from many disciplines in the field of science: biology, chemistry, geology, physics and meteorology. I also have a strong foundation in higher level math as a result of courses taken to complete my Bachelors Degree. I have Teaching Certification at the Elementary level and my experience at that level has given me the ability to break concepts down into small manageable steps which can be used to reach the larger goals.
I have a Bachelor's Degree in Environmental Science and an Elementary Education Teaching Certificate. To complete my Bachelor's Degree I was required not only to take many science courses but also many high level math courses. Being a certified teacher and working at the elementary school level have given me the ability to be able to break down concepts into easy to understand steps and connect those steps to achieve a goal. I am also able to build a solid foundation with skills which will enable the student to build upon these in the future.
I am a certified teacher in the area of Elementary Education and I taught the Everyday Math Program for seven years in the Pittsburgh Public School System to children in grades K - 5. This program not only taught basic foundational skills and concepts but practical applications for everyday life. This curriculum is similar to the Common Core Curriculum being taught in the schools today. It's focus was very hands-on and interactive.
I hold a Bachelor of Science Degree in Environmental Science. As part of my coursework I was required to take courses in the ares of Physical Science, Life Science and Ecology. I have a Bachelors Degree in Environmental Science which has provided me with a strong background in Mathematics. I also taught the Everyday Mathematics program for seven years at the Elementary School level. That teaching position enabled me to create a solid foundation in math concepts for the students to adequately prepare them for Middle School. I am able to revisit and firm up skills to bring the student to the mastery level necessary to achieve success with the Middle School math.
I taught reading to elementary school students for the Pittsburgh Public School District. I worked with the Harcourt Reading Program which focused on decoding strategies, comprehension and robust vocabulary. This program also had a spelling and writing component.
