About William

I am a geologist with over 25 years of experience in environmental consulting. After I completed my Ph.D., I worked as a scientist at the Pittsburgh environmental consulting firm Earth Sciences Consultants for fifteen years. During my years at Earth Sciences, I was the go-to guy for tasks requiring high levels of mathematics and technical analysis, and an informal trainer for junior technical staff. In 2004 my employer closed its doors, and I took the consequent opportunity to practice under my own shingle as WWGeosciences. I style my practice as “the intersection of geology, chemistry, and math” and operate mostly as a subcontractor to other consultants. This kind of work is by nature highly interdisciplinary, and the keys to success are a profound understanding of the basic physical and chemical sciences, and the ability to translate the results from techspeak to English.

At every stage in my career, I have greatly enjoyed explaining concepts and methods to people. I have taught as at Penn State and Waynesburg College, and I have done tutored younger students since my high school days. Currently I also coach middle school Track and Field for a private school.

I have been using mathematics throughout my technical career and think about it continually. Therefore I remember it and keep it fresh on my mind.

Math is not so much learning formulas, but understanding the logic so that you can derive the formulas from basic principles. I want to lead YOU to that kind of understanding.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Calculus

I have studied all forms of calculus, up to and including differential equations. It would be a pleasure working with you on them.

Chemistry

I am a seasoned professional with a Ph.D. in the application of chemistry to the earth. I have also taught and tutored fundamentals of chemistry at both the college and secondary school levels.

Geology

I am a licensed professional geologist in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. I have engaged in professional practice in this field for over 25 years. I have taught the subject at the college level. I have given expert testimony on geological subjects in Federal Court

Precalculus

I hold a Ph.D. in geochemistry and I am engaged in professional practice applying doing computer models of ground water. I have tutored mathematics from algebra to calculus at both secondary and college levels.
