When coaching children, you have to keep everything basic. I am going to tell you how I coached my middle school basketball team.

Show the kids how to have fun, how to show good sportsmanship, and the rules of the game, also you have to be a good role model for your kids. This will help create a healthy and fun environment for your team.

There are three main aspects to a beginning basketball team, offense, defense, and conditioning.

First, when teaching offense do not let them pretend to be Michael Jordan. Show them how to dribble, pass, and shoot inside the paint. There are many good drills that will create good ball handling skills. Also show them the correct way to pass the ball. Make them throw two-handed passes at all times, and also teach them the right way to shoot a lay-up, and a jump shot. It is hard to keep kids attention if you are just doing drills for the entire practice that is why in every practice you should give them a time to scrimmage. This can be done in several different ways. One way is to give them an incentive that if everything goes right in practice, we will scrimmage for the last 10-15 minutes. Or the way that I used was to incorporate scrimmaging with the drills. Set out rules for them to follow like pass the ball three times before you shoot, all shots must be inside the paint, and make two-handed passes.

For Defense, you should show them the proper defensive stance, ball side help, defensive slide, rebounding, and the difference between man and zone defenses. Defense is hard to teach kids because to most it is not as fun as offense. Although it might not be as fun, it is actually more important.

I've played Basketball since I was in the 1st grade through college. I coached travel basketball & in house basketball with 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th grade kids.
