About Robin

I have a B.S. and M.S. in Biology from Brown University and have been teaching science for 5 years. I am currently pursuing an Ed. D in STEM Education at the University of Pittsburgh. I have tutored science for over 10 years. I also scored 780 on SATII Biology, 800 on SATII Chemistry, and 5 on AP Chemistry. I help students succeed by sharing my excitement for the content. I also offer enrichment activities for those students who want to achieve above and beyond their peers.

Science is my passion, and I bring that enthusiasm to every tutoring session. My greatest joy is seeing a student, who has been working hard, finally learn something new, have the "Aha!" moment. I am a New Jersey certified teacher and teach middle school science. Before I started teaching, I tutored students in all middle school and high school science and math subjects, as well as both math and English SAT preparation.

I have always believed that every child should be given the opportunity to be successful academically, because academic success has been shown to lead to more choices and financial success in life. I will do what it takes to make sure your child has the most possible opportunities.

First, I will get to know your student - find out their academic strengths, weaknesses, interests, and leverage this information to determine the best strategy for your student to do better in school or on tests. I don't just teach the content. I collect data to diagnose the challenges and determine the most efficient and highest-leverage ways to improve, which can include practice, study skills, or reading and writing strategy.

Although my background is in science, I have always loved and excelled in math. I scored 750 on the math section of the SAT, 800 on the SATII, and 5 on AP Calculus BC. I specialize in high school algebra, geometry, and SAT prep, which I have tutored for over 6 years.

As a full-time teacher, my most available times are on weekends, although I am available almost any time on Saturdays and Sundays. My schedule is more flexible for online tutoring, and I am willing to work with you if weekday evenings are preferable. My base rate is $95/hour for in-person tutoring and $70/hour online.

I look forward to hearing how I can help your child be more successful in school!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADHD

I teach in an integrated middle school classroom. Each year, I have 3-8 students with ADD/ADHD. I use my knowledge from graduate coursework in special education, my experience helping all students achieve success, and support from my colleagues in the special education department to determine which supports and strategies will best help these students succeed. I have a repertoire of strategies that can help students with ADD/ADHD do better in school, including organization and time management skills.

Chemistry

I am a certified chemistry teacher. I took chemistry coursework at Brown University.

Genetics

I have a B.S. and M.S. in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. At Brown University, I took 3 genetics courses: Genetics, Evolutionary Genetics, and Computational Theory of Evolutionary Genetics. I currently teach basic genetics as a 7th grade science teacher in NJ.

Praxis

I am a certified teacher in NJ and CT. I have taken and passed several Praxis exams, and have received Awards of Excellence in several subjects. I am especially qualified to tutor in Praxis I and science Praxis II.

Regents

I went to school in NY, so I have taken many regents in different subject areas, always scoring above 90, and most scores above 95. I am familiar with the curricula and the review books available to prepare. I have spent time tutoring specifically for Regents Earth Science and Algebra I and II.

Study Skills

I have taught middle school science for 5 years. I have taught in high-needs urban schools, where students are not taught how to study or work independently at home. All study skills must be scaffolded, taught through direct instruction, practiced in class, and then practiced independently at home. I have many strategies on how to study, including making study guides and flash cards.
