About Susan

My passion is to see students succeed. But, it doesn't always happen during school hours. I was a middle school teacher for 7 years, and I was expected to teach a certain amount of knowledge in a short amount of time. The hard reality is that when students seem to get "it" or maybe right before, teachers move on to the next topic.

Tutoring is an opportunity for extra practice so you can be sure that you understand what you need to know. It's also a great place to get ahead of your classmates. When the teacher introduces the next topic, you will be more comfortable hearing about something new. I compare tutoring with weight lifting. In order to get your muscles stronger, you need new challenges and exercises with some stretching. It shouldn't be too easy or frustratingly difficult.

With math, I like to make connections of what you are learning to something that you may see in the world or that you are learning in other classes. Charts and graphs in social studies need to be read correctly and it takes a strong math mind to understand them. Math is a way to look at patterns and relationships in the world using numbers. We not only can work out the relationship on paper, we can often identify patterns in the world or create them ourselves.

English is about words. What do words mean and how do we make them work to communicate what we are thinking? I want to help you learn vocabulary and grammar so you can use words well. Together we can analyze other writing, and practice your creation of sentences, paragraphs, and papers.

I cannot wait to help you see where math is around you. You do not have to like math to understand it, but the more you understand math, I think you will enjoy it. It's the same with words. The more you enjoy the look and sound of words, the more you will enjoy reading and writing. There are accurate and excellent words to help express what you are feeling, thinking, experiencing. I look forward to working with you and making your school education more relevant to your life.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Common Core

I am certified to teach in the Commonwealth of Virginia which opted out of Common Core. This means that Virginia's Standards of Learning met the expectations and sometimes surpassed the expectations of the Common Core. I am able to use the scope and sequence of the Common Core to deconstruct what students need to tutor them appropriately.

Study Skills

Study skills are specific skills to equip students to succeed academically and socially. Study skills are taught explicitly, but are flexible. Students can be taught to use their experiences, observations, mistakes and successes to refine their own set of study skills.

Great tutor — Susan has done a great job with my daughter. My daughter doesn't like asking for help, feels like she should be able to figure out everything on her own. Susan made her feel very comfortable and my daughter actually likes visits with her. ...
