I have learned from experience why having a good education is important and valuable in one's life and career. I struggled at times to learn a particular concept or idea, but once I made a serious effort and spent some quality time on it, it became an integral part of my knowledge and a meaningful part of my understanding. There were times when I needed someone else to help me understand, sometimes a parent or friend, sometimes a teacher or counselor and sometimes a tutor. All of these experiences helped me to learn not only the facts and skills, but also what kind of student and life learner I am.
For more than thirty years I have tutored, counseled and mentored and taught students of all ages and backgrounds and I enjoyed spending time with each of them. In many ways l have learned as much from them as I hope I have imparted to them. My formal, post-secondary education came from the US Naval Academy, Duquesne University and the University of Pittsburgh in the fields of English, Math, Counseling, Psychology and Educational Administration. Among my many interests are sports, fitness, all aspects of music, theater, concerts, movies, gardening and spending time with other people.
I have over thirty years of experience helping students of all ages understand their basic math lessons. I supervised PSAT, SAT and ACT testing for over 20 years.
For over thirty years I have helped students of all ages understand and organize their writing skills in order to write an on-topic, grammatically correct and meaningful paper of appropriate length. In addition to teaching and counseling, I have been a College Placement counselor.
I love meeting new people of all ages and backgrounds as much as I love tutoring, teaching and counseling. I am open to finding the best way to help you accomplish your goals. I have taught basic math and Algebra to middle school, high school and young adult students for over 20 years.
I have undergraduate and graduate degrees in teaching all aspects and levels of English and much experience in working with ESL/ESOL students.
I developed and taught a study skills program for 9th and 10th grade students for 12 years. During most of my career as a Guidance Counselor in the last 20 plus years, I worked closely with students who were having academic difficulties. That means that, in addition to providing personal support and encouragement, I also continuously reviewed and reinforced the need for good study skills along with maintaining a regular study time and and good study habits. I am a patient person and I understand the need for strengthening skills and establishing and maintaining a stable approach to learning for students who struggle with the academic process for whatever reason.
At the beginning of my career in Education, I taught English full time for about 12 years. I was Chair of the English Department most of that time. I later got degrees in Counseling and in Administration. That gave me the opportunity to work with many students who have various kinds of difficulties organizing their work, keeping focused and getting assignments completed in good time.
