About Matthew

Originally from Northern California, I hold a BA in English from William Jessup University and am currently working on my MFA in Creative Writing at the University of Pittsburgh. While at WJU, I spent two semesters working as a peer English tutor for other undergraduate students. I also spent two semesters as a teacher's assistant for an English professor, occasionally getting to run the class, lecture, etc. The year in between my undergraduate and graduate careers, I worked for a few months as a substitute teacher and got to sub a few high school English classes. At Pitt, I've been doing proofreading/bibliographic/research work for a faculty member, and last school year I also worked as an English tutor for Pitt's student athletes.

For me, tutoring is a way to share my accumulated experience in English classrooms. Reading and writing require a great deal of focus and creative problem solving, and it is easy to attend to both in a less than enthusiastic manner. However, even a small push toward creative comprehension or personal investment in a subject or text can lead to immense growth. I am also interested in tutoring because I hope to teach at the collegiate level once I have finished my MFA. Because of this desire, I am very interested in the way clients learn from me, as opposed to being only invested in the endgame of higher grades. I believe that the process of learning, especially in reading and writing, is more beneficial and generative than final grades or standardized testing scores.

Because I only take two courses a term and my other job is done on my own time, I have a fairly flexible schedule. I am mainly interested, though, in making sure we can cultivate clear lines of communication during tutoring sessions. While higher grades are certainly the endgame, I want to provide a genuine learning environment in which you can ask questions and challenge assumptions. In a consultation, talk to me about how you learn, what makes learning difficult, etc,. Ideally, we can find a way to make our sessions the most adaptable to your specific learning requirements.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
