About Zachary

As a reader, speaker, learner, and overall enthusiast of the English language, I wish to help any student who needs assistance in their English endeavors. I began my learning journey as a young fiction writer and aspiring game developer, graduating Summa Cum Laude from my undergraduate institution. Staying focused on the language that I love, I am now a Master of Arts student in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages. Throughout this past year, I have worked with other college students in over 300 writing tutoring sessions, dealing in subjects including (but lot limited to) film and literature critique, medical and psychological studies, and ESL basic writing. As I have learned from the experiences of others, as well as my own, you will most certainly have to write regardless of which path you decide to take in life.

My passion is for the English language and for the strengthening of your individual abilities as a writer, reader, and speaker of the language. Tutoring has taught me so much about the ways that people learn and what makes a learner passionate about their studies; if you're excited to write your paper or speak with confidence, then I am excited to guide you!

My master's studies in TESOL have helped me to develop an understanding of individual learners' needs, as well as the reasons for why we decide to learn a language. I have not only studied methods and teaching strategies, but, more importantly, how to facilitate learning for an individual. Likewise, my background in both creative and research genres lends itself to a wide range of writing needs. English is a notoriously tricky language to learn, so I feel that tutoring the individual is more important than simply performing grammar drills.

In an ESL tutoring session, we can cover any topics that will get you talking, as your investment in the language is the best reason for you learn it. This approach goes for all other areas that I tutor as well; if you're having trouble with literature, we can cover subjects that are closer to your tastes, then devise ways to approach a topic that is giving you trouble. Once we can make a connection between you and your goal, I will be ecstatic to help you reach it.

My cancellation policy is for two or more hours in advance, so please be sure to contact me if you cannot attend a scheduled session.
Comfortable tutoring sessions are one of my top priorities; while I have no problems with home tutoring, a quiet, public spot is preferred (local or university libraries are ideal). Further, your feedback is extremely important to me, and your willingness to share comments or concerns with me will help me to refine my practices as a tutor.

Please contact me with any questions you may have. As your English tutor, I am so excited to help you build toward your goals!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ESL/ESOL

I am currently a master's student in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL), studying best practices for adult ESL learners in a research and practice driven university. I am constantly researching new practices and approaches that facilitate English language learning needs.

Writing

As a student of both creative and research writing, I am able to offer peer review and tutoring for any writing project. My undergraduate degree in creative writing developed my knowledge of the mechanics and rules of writing, as well as the aesthetic choices that make for good writing. With my background in Master's level research, I am also able to assist in the other parts of the writing process, including brainstorming, finding reliable sources, drafting, revision, and publishing.
