About Claire

Hello!

My name is Claire. I moved to Pittsburgh in 2009 to attend the University of Pittsburgh, and graduated in 2013 with a dual degree in English Writing and History. My focus in English Writing was nonfiction, however, I am also very knowledgeable in other areas such as Fiction writing or Literature. As a History major, I focused on American history (more specifically, the Civil War, women's history, and African American history from Antebellum south through the Modern Civil Rights movement).

While I did not tutor in college, my writing courses used a peer review strategy. This means that at each step along the way, my fellow classmates and I were marking up each others's drafts, sharing ideas, and collaborating on ways to improve each others' work. That process has made me a much more confident and focused writer. More importantly, I learned how to provide guidance without trying to diminish a writer's voice. You might not realize it, but you have your own voice, too. You just need to find it.

I loved being a student, but I remember the frustrating times, too: the times when you have 3 papers due for 3 different subjects, a novel that must be read within 2 days, and an exam that could make or break your grade for the semester. I know it might seem impossible to be able to do each of these things (and do them well), but it isn't! You are capable of so much, you might just need to change your strategy.

My areas of specialty are: writing, creative writing, literature, grammar, essay, research, proofreading, MLA citation, APA citation, Chicago style citation

I understand how frustrating it can be to have a great idea but get stuck on the words--I've been there, too! If you are struggling with a research paper, essay, or even if you just need feedback on a creative writing project, I can help you produce your best work. I love writing, and I'd love the opportunity to make your writing experience less daunting and more fulfilling.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

American History

I received a dual Bachelor of Arts & Sciences from the University of Pittsburgh in History and English Writing with a concentration in American History. I have studied American history in all aspects, but focused on African American history, and the American Civil War, and the Civil Rights movement. I have also studied the history of areas outside the United States that directly affected the development of this country (suffragettes in Europe, the Enlightenment, African history and the Atlantic Slave Trade). I can communicate effectively with students of all levels to make sure the connections between historic events and motivations are being made.

Writing

I received a dual Bachelor of Arts & Sciences from the University of Pittsburgh in English Writing and History. My focus for English Writing was Nonfiction. I have extensive experience proofreading, editing, and reviewing creative writing of all genres, not just Nonfiction. Through my studies as a History student, I have experience writing, editing and proofreading research projects. I am also able to give guidance to students on more effective research methods.
