About Cindy

Do you have a student who is gifted, talented, and able but is not being pushed enough? Some teachers in our schools today have too many students to assign long, complex written pieces. They cannot tailor literature recommendations to help your student find the book that will inspire his or her imagination. They cannot provide the necessary specific feedback your student needs to grow as a reader, writer, and thinker. After many years of teaching English/ language arts to students at independent schools, I have the experience and knowledge necessary to help your student reach his or her potential as a reader, writer, thinker, and learner.

My greatest strength is helping to push those kids who are bright and can finish assignments quickly and with little effort. I had great success in meeting them at their level to interest them and get them to extend their efforts, to do more than just the minimum. I have read widely in young adult literature, so can guide students toward reading which will help them build fluency and challenge themselves. Further, I am widely read enough to be able to help students read, write, and research in content areas. For the past five years I taught language arts at a highly regarded local, independent school. Before I had children, I taught for seven years in every grade, eight through twelve, at independent and public schools. I attended highly selective universities for an undergraduate and master's degree and have always been a very successful student.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Grammar

I am an English major from Georgetown University. I received an M.A.T. in teaching of English at the secondary level from Georgetown University. I recently taught English/ language arts for five years at Winchester Thurston School. I have a total of twelve years teaching English/ language arts. I focused on grammar teaching for 6th and 7th graders during those most recent five years. In addition to teaching students the eight parts of speech, I taught units on issues of mechanics and usage such as complete sentences, use of apostrophe, often confused words, use of commas, and use of quotation marks. Of course I also taught them how to proofread and proofread with and for them continually.

Literature

I am an undergraduate English major from Georgetown University. I received an M.A.T. in teaching of English at the secondary level from Boston University. At both of those places I studied and wrote a lot about literature. I also taught literary criticism at independent schools for many years. I recently taught English/ language arts for five years at Winchester Thurston School and we read and interpreted literature together. I have a total of twelve years teaching English/ language arts.

Proofreading

I am an undergraduate English major from Georgetown University. I received an M.A.T. in teaching of English at the secondary level from Boston University. I recently taught English/ language arts for five years at Winchester Thurston School. I have a total of twelve years teaching English/ language arts. Throughout my teaching experience I have worked with students on proofreading their own and fellow students' writing. I taught units on the mechanics and usage to help students understand the way to properly and clearly. Such units were, for example, use of commas and quotations, complete sentence, often confused words, and sentence combining.

Reading

I am an undergraduate English major from Georgetown University and I have a graduate degree in English Education (an M.A.T.) from Boston University. I have taught English/ Language Arts for twelve years. Most recently I taught 6th and 7th graders language arts at Winchester Thurston School in Pittsburgh. I have always taught critical reading as a teacher. I myself am a voracious reader and know lots of tricks and techniques to help students be better readers. In addition, I have read a lot of current middle grade and young adult literature, so I have lots of ideas and suggestions to give to students to help them find books that they will like.

Vocabulary

I am an English major from Georgetown University. I received an M.A.T. in teaching of English at the secondary level from Boston University. I recently taught English/ language arts for five years at Winchester Thurston School. I have a total of twelve years teaching English/ language arts. During each of those twelve years I taught vocabulary to students either through literature or through workbooks or programs. I am also a voracious reader and enjoy learning and using new and nuanced words.

Writing

I am an English major from Georgetown University. I received an M.A.T. in teaching of English at the secondary level from Boston University. I recently taught English/ language arts for five years at Winchester Thurston School. I have a total of twelve years teaching English/ language arts. Throughout my time teaching, I worked with students on various forms of writing -- everything from short stories and poems to research papers. We always used the writing process, so I was constantly reviewing drafts and helping students create better written pieces. Students would come into my classroom in 6th grade asking how many sentences they had to write. By the end of the year, they would be excitedly writing ten page stories.
