Hello, potential students and parents! Please read my entire bio so that you are aware of my policies and background! I am currently an undergraduate student at the University of Pittsburgh majoring in mathematics (with only one semester left until graduation!) and plan to attend graduate school in mathematics. For over 6 and a half years, I have privately tutored middle school, high school, and college students. Additionally, I have tutored and worked as a teaching assistant at Pitt.

I am passionate about anything related to math including its history, proofs, myriad applications, and continual challenges. The most pleasing thing about tutoring is that moment when a student finally understands a concept they just could not tackle on their own. I not only will facilitate the problem-solving process of homework but review, and if necessary, introduce the concepts and reasoning behind formulas and applications.

Please note that I am not a teacher nor do I possess a graduate degree in mathematics; I am still on a path of learning math and developing my skills in instruction. Since I tutor numerous courses, I cannot always know everything right off the bat. However, I am more than happy to review any material you send me beforehand so that I can prepare in advance – and you can get the most out of the session – at no extra charge. Feel free to message me with any questions you may have about my background, experience, or knowledge.

*Due to Coronavirus, I will ONLY offer online sessions during the summer regardless of business reopenings and restrictions lifted. Please note I only tutor during the week, and I do not accept same-day lesson requests.
Thank you for understanding.*

*Rates:
$33 per hour for all online sessions; $27 per hour for sessions in Linear Algebra, Differential Equations, or Multivariable Calculus only.

*Cancellation Policy:
If a student fails to show with no notice of cancellation, or is more than 15 minutes late and fails to contact me, I will charge for half of the scheduled session.

Subjects

Homeschool

Algebra 1,

Algebra 1

A solid foundation in algebra is necessary for all subsequent courses in math; I have used it extensively in every math class I have taken after high school algebra. I love tutoring this class because I find it is so important not only for required math classes in high school and college but for everyday life.
Algebra 2,

Algebra 2

If you want to be successful in classes like Pre-Calculus and Calculus, a strong foundation in Algebra 2 is crucial. I love to help students develop a deeper understanding by reviewing concepts and deriving formulas.
Calculus,

Calculus

I recently completed courses in single and multi-variable upper-level advanced calculus (i.e. proof-based, theoretical versions of single and multivariable calculus), which has significantly deepened my understanding of elementary concepts covered in calculus. Second only to algebra, I tutor students in calculus the most, and equally important, calculus is probably my favorite subject to tutor! *Please note that I have not tutored students in multivariable calculus, which is why I am charging a lower rate. If you forward me the problems you need help with beforehand, I'll make sure to work through them so that I can prepare for our session (at no extra charge, of course).*
Prealgebra,

Prealgebra

I am very familiar with prealgebra material and have helped many students. It is an enjoyable subject to tutor because it is the bridge to other fun math like algebra and precalculus!
Precalculus,

Precalculus

Precalculus is the bridge between algebra and calculus, which makes it a fun subject to tutor! I find it's important to assess a student's Algebra 2 skills to gauge if any concepts need reviewing - a student must have a solid foundation for success in Calculus. Precalculus typically covers a lot of material, so I try to offer tricks I used as a student, which lessened the need for rote memorization.
SAT Math

SAT Math

While it has been years since I took the SAT, I am familiar with all material covered in the math portion of the test. I can't help with test logistics but can review relevant concepts and go over practice problems.

Math

ACT Math,

ACT Math

While I have never taken the ACT, I am familiar with all material covered in the math portion of the test. I can't help with test logistics but can review relevant concepts and go over practice problems.

Differential Equations,

Differential Equations

I have not tutored students in differential equations, which is why I am charging a lower rate, but I have recently completed an upper-level course in ordinary differential equations. If you forward me the problems you need help with beforehand, I'll make sure to work through them so that I can prepare for our session (at no extra charge, of course).
Linear Algebra,

Linear Algebra

I have not tutored students in linear algebra, which is why I am charging a lower rate, but I have recently completed an upper-level course in linear algebra. I also frequently apply linear algebra to research work. If you forward me the problems you need help with beforehand, I'll make sure to work through them so that I can prepare for our session (at no extra charge, of course).

Trigonometry

Trigonometry

Trigonometry is highly prevalent in algebra and precalculus courses, as well as any future math courses a student plans to take - I still use trigonometry in my upper-level courses. However, it can be difficult to tackle because of the necessary rote memorization. I help students by suggesting tricks I used as a student and by deriving relevant formulas.

Very knowledgeable!

Charlene was great. She definitely made the most out of our time together and was able to help us work through all of the math problems we brought to the session. I would highly recommend her!

Knowledgeable and Patient Tutor

Charlene was able to see where I was struggling and help me grasp the concepts needed to engage with the new lessons in Pre-Calc. I will definitely team up with her again. She is wonderful! Patient!

Charlene is an expert!

Charlene is easy to speak with and understand. She explains everything thoroughly and was able to identify where my weaknesses and strengths are. She reviewed my work and answered all of my questions about how to best be prepared. I am learning at a fast pace due to Charlene's expertise! A+++

An Excellent Tutor

Charlene is a great tutor. It's easy for her to explain formulas and she is patient when you don't understand something. We only covered pre-calculus and a bit of trigonometry, but she never needed to take time to review to be able to teach. She is also very friendly and won't judge you if you make mistakes. I highly recommend her as a tutor.

Knowledgeable teacher with a lot of patience

I called Charlene to help out almost at the end of the school year. My kid was struggling with some of her units and she is very picky on who is teaching her. My kid loved her and enjoyed taking the lessons from her. Charlene had a lot of patience while discussing the lessons with her. I would love to continue my kid's lessons with Charlene.

Knowledgeable

I would be confused with which steps I would need to accurately solve my precalculus problems and which steps came first. Charlene guided me through and gave me a better understanding.

Good example of organized teaching

Charlene has been working very closely with me and it is helping me to regain some knowledge. I got help where I needed it because of her organization and her command of trigonometry, logarithms, and I expect to review everything before I take a test. My gratitude to Charlene. I guess I need to say also that perhaps I would have quit a long time ago. She is very good and worth it. I just have to say that my experience is that I am going to continue with my goals to review college math and precalculus.

Great job

She was able to help my son right away. She is knowledgeable and friendly. I will definitely use her again. He has been doing online sessions with her which have been working out very well for us.

Great tutor

Charlene reviewed Precalculus with my nephew and she was really patient and great. She was really personable and took time to explain the lesson. She was prepared and provided practice problems to improve his understanding. I was so pleased with her and so thankful we found an awesome tutor!
