About Charlene

Hello, potential students and parents! I have a B.S. in psychology and have almost completed my B.S. in mathematics. After I received my psychology degree, I decided to go back to school to pursue a career in a STEM field. I instantly fell in love with math while reviewing concepts for a math placement test. I decided to try tutoring to make extra money and to improve my math skills, only to find the most enjoyable job I've ever had. I received an A.S. in Mathematics with a GPA of 3.902 (all A's in math and science courses) from Northern Virginia Community College in December 2015. I plan on returning to school and completing my bachelor's in mathematics in the fall of 2018.

I am still on a path of learning math with over three years' experience privately tutoring. Since I am tutoring several different courses, I can't always know everything right off the bat. However, I guarantee I will have a well thought out answer for our next session. I am more than happy to review any material you send me beforehand so that I am well prepared and you can get the most out of the session, at no extra charge.

I am passionate about anything related to math including the history, proofs, myriad applications, and constant challenges. The best thing about tutoring is that moment when a student finally understands a concept they just couldn't tackle on their own. I not only will facilitate the problem-solving process of homework but review and if necessary, introduce the concepts and reasoning behind formulas and applications. **I am only available for ONLINE tutoring on Saturdays and Sundays as I am not usually home and don't have access to a vehicle on the weekends.** Please feel free to message me with any questions you may have about my background, experience, or knowledge.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

Algebra is necessary for all subsequent courses in math. I have used it extensively in every math class I have taken after Algebra 1. In high school, it was the only class I received a final grade of over 100%. I love tutoring this class because I find it is so important not only for required math classes in college but for everyday life.

Algebra 2

It is crucial that your foundation in Algebra 2 is solid if you want to be successful in classes like Pre-Calculus and Calculus. I had to review all concepts included in Algebra 2 before returning to school for my math degree and partly owe that time to my success in Calculus. In my experience, too much focus is put on tricks rather than really learning the meaning behind formulas and concepts. Those explanations are what I really like to share with students.

Calculus

Calculus I: I received a 100% on 2 out of 4 exams and a final grade of an 'A'. Limits, derivatives, and integrals are the main topics covered and I make it a priority that they are understood sequentially and thoroughly.

Calculus II: Probably the most difficult lower-level math class in my opinion and a majority of students. This class requires perseverance and hard work. For tutoring, I cover difficult material such as power series and emphasize performing practice problems constantly. I received a final grade of an 'A'.

Calculus III: The class I took was an honors level. This involved a different grading rubric for exams and several projects on Latex. I received almost a 97% on the final exam and a final grade of an 'A'.

Precalculus

When I started this class, there were 32 students; when I took the final, there were 8 students. Although the material may be easier to conceptualize than Calculus I, there is a lot more covered in one semester. I think this unexpected workload along with a lack of preparation may have overwhelmed students. My goal with tutoring is first assessing Algebra 2 skills to see if anything needs reviewing then tackling time-management and explaining new concepts. I emphasize the importance of getting a solid foundation in this class for success in Calculus.

Psychology

I have a B.S. in Psychology from George Mason University. I took the following courses: Psychology of Intimate Relationships, Death, Dying, and Grieving, Psychological Factors in Aging, Criminal Psychology, Physiological Psychology, Cognitive Psychology, Abnormal Psychology, Research Methods in Psychology, Statistics in Psychology, Social Psychology, and Developmental Psychology with a grade of a 'B' or above.

Sociology

I took Sociology in high school and college; both with a final grade of an 'A'. I really enjoyed the class, more than most of the other classes I have taken. I have a B.S. in Psychology and understand that while psychology is the study of the individual, sociology is the study of communities. I feel confident that I could help a student retain important terms and get excited about the concepts and stories sociology has to tell.

Trigonometry

Naturally, trigonometry is a huge part of Algebra 2 and Pre-Calculus. Since trigonometry mainly deals with right triangles, I focus on basic understanding of analytical geometry and then if necessary derive trigonometric functions through use of the unit circle. I think it is important to see and understand derivations in order to remember them.
