About Cindy

I remember what it was like to be a student; therefore, I can identify with your frustrations and learning difficulties. With 20+ years experience teaching elementary school, middle school, and high school, I have amassed a wide range of skills and techniques that equip and encourage you to succeed.

My areas of expertise are grammar and American Literature, but I am adept in all the language arts from 2nd grade through SAT prep. We will work together to ensure that you learn and master the information needed to succeed in your classes and beyond.

Besides building a learning relationship with you, I also communicate with your parent/s after each session, so they stay informed regarding your progress. We are all partners in your success!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

I am a teacher of Language Arts (Reading, Grammar, Writing, Speaking) to 2nd, 5th, 6-12th graders.

Handwriting

Handwriting was one of the subjects on the curricula when I taught second grade. I incorporated using cursive letters into printing, e.g., as the student learned a cursive letter, s/he then began using it along with the printed letters when s/he wrote. This method worked very well and did not overwhelm the student. I was also able to correct and modify the students work very easily.

Phonics

Phonics is a large part of learning to read. When I taught second grade reading and vocabulary in middle school, I encouraged the students to use phonics for pronunciation and assistance in learning definitions. In teaching primary grade students, we made flash cards of the various sounds and blends and practiced pronunciation and finding objects that matched our letter blends/sounds.

Public Speaking

I taught a seventh grade public speaking class; however, my expertise in public speaking comes from being a public speaker at my current place of employment (addressing new employees regarding H/R information), at school assemblies and as president of the Parent Teacher Guild at my child's school.

Study Skills

Study Skills is an area that has to be tailored to a child's learning rhythms. When I taught SAT prep, I only had a once or twice weekly meeting with students. I incorporated many ways of learning/remembering to encourage students. I used song, repetition, and games in all levels of teaching/SAT prep. I have found that the older students appreciate the incorporation of games as well as the younger students.
