About Molly

Watching a child learn and grow through their lives is one of the greatest feelings a teacher can have. I have been working and teaching children for over 10 years and feel that way every day that I work with them. I find joy and happiness helping a child find what they are passionate about!

I have been a teacher in the public and private schools for over 7 years. Through those years I have worked with all different learners. Having a Masters in Special Education has helped me as a teacher to work with any type of learner. I have worked with students who have IEP's, Gifted, emotional support, and Dyslexia. One of the most important parts of having a successful relationship with a child is getting to know them and making them feel confident in themselves. I do this by talking and meeting with them before I begin working and also while the session is going on to continue the relationship.

Many of my tutoring experience's have been with young elementary students who need extra assistance in reading. I have lots of experience's in the guided reading technique, Wilson Phonics, word building, and other reading strategies. I do many of those throughout a lesson as well as games and activities to motivate my students. I want to make sure the child is enjoying their experience as well as gaining confidence. Along with reading, I have done work with math concepts such as: Singapore Math, Calendar Math, and Investigations.

I look forward to working with your child and you to gain confidence and happiness in them!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

When I have worked with students who experience ADD/HD I teach them in small increments and let them take small breaks to do fun learning games or get up and stretch. Getting them to focus in small amounts eventually helps them gain stamina as I get to know them individually. I have used breathing, stretching, and other movement techniques to help them. I also like to reward the m for their hard work, such as stickers and something the child may be interested in.

Aspergers

I have a masters in Special Education grades k-12. I have worked with children who have had Aspergers in an elementary classroom setting. Using many strategies to help the child such as seating arrangements, breaks, differentiating curriculum based on learning style, communication log with parents. I feel it helps to get to know the child and family to see what strategies and activities would benefit the child.

Common Core

I have worked using the Common Core standards in various schools in Pennsylvania. Going to workshops and learning the standards for each subject has helped me teach to those standards. Keeping up to date on changes and information is important to me to allow myself and my students to succeed in their work.

Dyslexia

I have had experience working with some students with dyslexia. I have worked using the Wilson Phonics program that supports and helps students with Dyslexia. Grouping and reviewing information in small chunks until the student has successfully mastered certain phonics sounds and sight words is another way I have helped them.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have been working with elementary aged children in grades k-2 for over 7 years. The following programs I have worked and taught are: guided reading in The Journeys reading program, Wilson phonics, Singapore Math, Investigations Math, Lucy Culkins writing program, 6 traits, and many others. When tutoring I have used these programs and others to work with my students. I also have developed techniques and strategies to motivate my students from having a Masters in Special Education.

Phonics

I have used many programs to teach children basic phonics skills. The Fundations phonics program has broken up the sounds with basic pictures and other activities such as writing and reading to correlate to their program. I also have done a lot with word building following the Fountas and Pinnell program which has brought great success to my students.

Special Needs

I have a masters in special education from Duquesne University. I have worked with many students who range in ability and needs. My experience ranges in students with emotional support, ADD, reading, writing, and math support. As a teacher, I find my students strengths to help them with ares that they may need more support in.

Molly is an amazing tutor!

Molly practiced letter recognition and sounds with my 4 yr old. They played games to help my daughter learn her letter sounds. Molly made learning fun! She is such a great tutor and my daughter cannot wait for her next lesson! Thanks Molly!
