Mercyhurst University (Political Science)
As I said in my profile title, I'm open and looking forward to tutoring English, history, and politics. Even English political history, if that's what you're looking for. My name is Will, and I graduated from Mercyhurst University in Erie, PA, in 2013, with a bachelor's degree in Political Science. I never cared much for math and sciences. Instead, I gravitated toward history from a young age, wanting to know how it was that we got where we are. Plus, women love being told stories about Abraham Lincoln, from time to time, so I've got that going for me.
I found that in my experience as a student, both at Mercyhurst and Upper St Clair HS, that my most intelligent, demanding, and rewarding teachers were those who taught history, civics, and geography. It is also the case that the most important teacher I ever had taught English, which I admit was a bit of a departure from what I was used to in the subject. From him, I developed a love for literature which I maintain to this day, and coupled it with a natural aptitude for grammar, writing, and speaking.
However, with all that said, I more than understand that some people did not have the same experience or aren't having the same experience right now. I hated math and science for this reason. From bad teachers to those who didn't understand how to get through to kids (or simply refused to), I've experienced it all. That said, I cannot promise that I have a magic formula for relating to or reaching every individual student, but I can promise that I will try. And, if it's simply the case that you/your child just needs a bit of extra practice, that's just as well.
My "real" job, at the moment, is as a cook at a restaurant in the South Hills. As such, my hours are strange, but flexible. I am neither an expert nor a beginner in any of the subjects or areas for which I have made myself available for tutoring. Some subjects may require me to "brush up" a little bit, but if hired, I will arrive on time and with competent knowledge of the subjects to be taught and discussed. I only ask that any student who works with me puts in equal effort, and comes into it with a positive attitude. Any subject can be difficult to even the best students, and this can be frustrating. However, nothing is out of reach.
I look forward to hearing from any interested students, and to maybe even learning a few things, myself. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
