About Gretchen

Whether you're working on improving your English for your TOEFL exam, your citizenship test, for professional or academic reasons, or just in general, I'm here and ready to help you! I have plenty of experience that qualifies me to be your tutor. For 2 years, I taught English to more than 100 immigrants and refugees at the beginning and intermediate levels. For the last 3 years, I have also taught an ESL course at a community college for more advanced students, many of whom are looking to perfect their English for academic or professional reasons. The reviews from these students have been overwhelmingly positive, which I credit to my teaching methods that seem to work well for many students.

My lessons are tailored to students' goals whether personal, professional, or academic. Furthermore, when teaching English, I like to keep our sessions diverse and memorable-- I know that one of the biggest challenges of learning English is remembering what you've learned. To help with this, I make the concepts as memorable as possible by acting them out, demonstrating them, telling their history or background, and getting you involved. Plus, we'll never move forward without reviewing what you've already learned. No matter what the subject or focus area, we'll learn new vocabulary and idioms that are related to your goals. Then, we'll focus in on the components of your goal that might include grammar, spoken English, or writing. We'll practice our newly learned vocabulary and skills using worksheets, activities, and conversations.

I'm here to help you reach your goal and I know we're going to have fun doing it!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

I minored in Biology during my undergraduate career. I took courses in biology, microbiology, biodiversity, and bioethics, including related lab work. My GPA in biology related courses was a 4.0. I also tutored GED students in biology and sciences while interning at a GED program in New York City.

While a peer tutor in college, I gained experience in grammar because it was my job to read and edit other people's papers and correct grammar mistakes. Also, I have taught an ESL class at a local community college five times now on the topic of grammar. I have tackled tricky subjects such as perfect tenses, conditional clauses, and active/passive voice. Student reviews of my teaching, collected by the college, have always been positive.

I have a Bachelor's of Science degree in Psychology. I had a 4.0 GPA in all courses in my major. I received multiple honors for my study of Psychology including receiving a Psychology Department Award and being selected as an award recipient by the Richmond County Psychological Association. I was also selected by our department to be a peer tutor in Psychology, a position in which I tutored fellow students in psychology related courses.

Before any of my experience of teaching English came about, I was a spelling bee champion. I competed in multiple spelling bees in my youth and even won a county-wide spelling bee. Also, when I was employed as a peer tutor in my college, it was part of my job to help edit people's papers both from a conceptual standpoint and from a mechanical standpoint making sure they weren't submitting a paper that had spelling errors that spellcheck wouldn't pick up.

I have taught writing skills to both GED students and to ESL students. My experience teaching writing skills to GED students has involved teaching how to write an effective essay following a 5-paragraph format, with interesting transitions, a strong opening, and thought-out evidence and supporting details. As writing relates to ESL students, I have taught students the mechanics of writing in the English language, the difference between formal and informal writing, and many more things like vocabulary, spelling and grammar that form the foundation of good writing skills.
