About Justin

Justin is a uniquely diverse musician with experience in rock bands, baroque and classical ensembles, recording studios and everything in between.

Specifically, these have included Orchestras (Carnegie Mellon Philharmonic), feature solo performances (while part of the 34th Army Band), appearances with contemporary jazz groups (Unified Jazz Ensemble, Charles Lazarus Quartet), new music recitals (Iowa premier of Terry Riley's famous piece, "In C"), as well as over 8 years, 100 concerts and 3 studio albums with his alternative rock band.

Unsurprisingly, these ventures have lead him towards a broad perspective on what it means to be a musician; something he is passionate about sharing with other musicians. Being equally passionate about teaching other musicians, Justin has formally taught students of every level of advancement. His future plans are aimed towards teaching trumpet professionally at a college or university.

He has learned from many excellent teachers such as Neal Berntsen (Pittsburgh Symphony), Bob Dorer (Minnesota Orchestra) and virtuoso Charles Lazarus (Canadian Brass, Minnesota Orchestra etc). Justin received his BM in Trumpet Performance at Iowa State University (Cum Laude) and is currently working towards his MM in Trumpet Performance at Carnegie Mellon University.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Music History

I have a Bachelor's in Music Performance from Iowa State University and am in the process of completing my Master's of Music in Performance from Carnegie Mellon.

During this coursework, I have always excelled at music history- often helping to explain and instruct fellow students. Specifically I have taken 5 undergraduate and graduate level music history courses, and earned nothing less than a B+ in any of them.

I have a very straightforward way of explaining concepts, and use basic, proven learning techniques for memorization.

Trumpet

I have a Bachelor's in Music Performance from Iowa State University, and am working on my Master's in Music Performance from Carnegie Mellon.
I've been playing the trumpet for 14 years, and am currently pursuing a career teaching trumpet professionally at a college or university.
I think that by focusing on inspiration, musicianship, and fundamentals, that ANY student can and will improve!!
