About Jillian

I am a public school elementary school teacher and have taught in a variety of community-cased early childhood and kindergarten readiness programs. I have a graduate degree in elementary and early childhood education from Duquesne University. Prior to obtaining my master's degree I coordinated the children's programming for Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh. As a kindergarten teacher I worked for the University of Pittsburgh: Office of Child Development Ready Freddy kindergarten readiness program at various locations around Pittsburgh. Last year I wrote the curriculum for and taught a similar program through the Urban League of Greater Pittsburgh.

I am able to do a variety of diagnostic reading and phonic screening assessments to help support the most targeted tutoring. My background includes working with students who have autism spectrum disorders, attachment disorders, ADD/ADHD, and ESL students. Following an initial meeting, I will provide an outline of goals, strategies, and individualized materials to support growth and provide a progress plan to meet your child's needs for the current or future school year. My interest in tutoring is reaching students who may not feel confident or successful in their academic life and how I can help provide the strategies and skills necessary to feel confident approaching new subjects in elementary school and beyond. A tremendous amount of our attitude toward reading is based on our perceived skill, so connecting with struggling readers is critical for forming a positive attitude toward life-long learning.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
