About Cathie

After spending 30 years working with children in one capacity or another, I am always amazed at how they view the world. It brings me great pleasure to see the joy in their eyes when they learn something new and suddenly grasp a new concept. It is with this deep understanding, that I will work with your child from an "out of the box" point of view.

Each child learns differently. It is not a cookie cutter world. Some kids learn visually, some from hearing the presentation of the information and then applying it to an art form....building blocks, coloring, singing , poetry etc. These paths offer a visual and auditory stimulation that open a new way of learning. It offers them a real world perspective from a child's point of view to process what they learn.

I have a Masters Degree from Mercyhurst College. I was fortunate enough to work for the Family Division for 15 years as a mediator dealing with child custody and support. I have seen children at their worst and know what to do when they are struggling with any issues. I have been an instructional aid substitute with the Plum School District in the past. I am also on the Board of several organizations, in a volunteer capacity, working with children to ensure their safety and well being.

I truly believe each child has a wonderful future ahead of them and are not limited. The key is to find what works for them and make it fun along the way.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

Learning should be fun and productive at the same time. Parents learn early on how each child is different and processes what they take in through their eyes in a variety of different ways. The key is to find what works for them and make it work from an education standpoint. I will access what learning patterns work best for them, and we will work together toward success. I have a Master's Degree from Mercyhurst College and have a Certification in Mediation. I have worked as a substitute Instructional Aide with the Plum Borough School District with all K-6 grades as well as Special Education. I am on several Boards/Committees that ensure the safety, health and well being of children.

Elementary Math

Math doesn't have to be boring or hard! By utilizing the systems that I have created with other elementary students I have worked with, before you know it it will all make sense. Math games are a huge part of my lesson plan. Using every day objects and ideas to make it fun, helps kids remember what they learn.

Phonics

I have a Masters Degree from Mercyhurst University in Criminal Justice with a minor in Psychology. I have worked for years as a Special Needs Instructional aid K-6. I have spent time working with kids who needed special instruction on phonics at the elementary School level as well as junior high. A lesson plan may include utilizing rhyming words, beginning sounds, sounding out words, what's that sound and name those vowels games. Frequently, we will work with songs, poetry and silly stories to address proper enunciation and identification of words.

Proofreading

During my college years, I assisted blind and/or visually impaired students with their homework. This included but was not limited to reviewing their written work for submission to class. In addition, I have written an extensive paper for my thesis in graduate school to use for future PhD work. I worked with fellow peers in evaluating their thesis work for completion of their Masters Degree. Currently, I review HS papers and Federal Agent applications for errors and inconstancies to provide a more fluid presentation.

Reading

Not all kids read at the same pace and it is important to gauge where the "hiccup" may be. In the past, as a K-6 Instructional Aide, I have incorporated several methods to help with the reading process. From the basics for younger children to more intensive exercises for older kids, I utilize the skimming, scanning, intensive and extensive methods. These steps are a working formula for success. I also find reviewing sections or pages at a time can help with comprehension. Reading opens up a child's world and it is vital to their future.

Spelling

Every child can spell. The key is to determine if they are visual or auditory learners. While working with K-6 children, I have learned that numerous tips can help kids retain the spelling of the word. Different colors can be used to break down the word into manageable bites. Rapping and singing the spelling of the words is a fun way to make the spelling of the word stay in their minds. Read it, see it, write it, say it helps them retain the spelling as well. Repetition mixed with fun gains huge strides. And practicing daily, both visually and in writing works wonders. I can show parents how to play games with their children in the car or around the house to incorporate their spelling words into their every day world. All of these aspects lead to a stress free environment for learning.

Study Skills

I am a very organized individual who is an expert at time management. First we can design a study plan. This will take the form of a prioritized schedule and overview of what you need to study and when it needs to be done. We can work on identifying your pattern of learning whether it be visual or auditory. It is often helpful to create note cards for memorization purposes. It is also important to identify that cramming and study distractions have a negative influence on the learning process. By approaching each subject in a targeted, focused way, it no longer feels like an overwhelming experience.

Tennis

I have played tennis since age 8. I played first singles for Plum High School. I went on to win the intramural championships at Edinboro University.
