About KENNETH

Hello Prospective Students! I'm Ken, a Professor with a world--literally!--of experience, eminently qualified and eager to tutor you in any of the myriad subjects in which I have training, skills, and experience. These subjects range from business to arts and languages (including all manner of business, finance, entrepreneurship, marketing, management, operations--both domestic and international--the latter aided greatly by my 30-year career as Founder, President and CEO of my own international consulting firm; to language arts: ESL, Russian, all aspects of English grammar and literature, music, film and other cultural areas); to social sciences and history (I've taught more than 60 different university courses in the fields of law, political science, international relations, comparative politics, terrorism, security studies, sociology, criminology, area studies covering all regions of the world, international organizations--including directing Model UN programs multiple times--and all aspects and periods of both world and American history; to test preparation and extensive general studies. I served the US government as a diplomat/"covert operative" during the waning days of the Cold War in the USSR; I advised two Soviet/Russian Presidents (Gorbachev and Yeltsin), writing the draft of the first "democratic" Russian Constitution; and I served two American Presidents, authoring the draft START II Treaty under contract with the Reagan Administration's DoD. Following my government service, I have taught at more than a dozen top US colleges and universities (Penn, Rutgers, PSU, Pittsburgh, Villanova, Drexel, among others) and appears on many local and national television and radio programs as an expert commentator. Most importantly for YOU: I have received uniformly outstanding evaluations from my students over the years, as a dynamic, challenging, extremely knowledgeable ("encyclopedic mind" was most flattering) and always interesting professor. This is how I tutor: with extensive knowledge, a high-velocity and varied skill-set, accumulated wisdom, dynamism, clarity, virtually unmatched experience from the classroom and the world--and compassion and patience. We all learn at different rates and in different ways: my teaching style reflects that awareness and my approach is always geared to the specific needs of the student; thus, the outstanding results and performance reviews speak for themselves.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Business

I have taught numerous business (strategy, entrepreneurship, operations, marketing, management, international/global) courses at both the undergraduate and graduate (MBA) levels, at Rutgers, Shippensburg, Phila U, among others. I've also taught specialized topics, including Doing Business in the USSR/Russia, DB...Esat Asia, Trading Blocs, and the EU. Finally, I founded and serve as President and CEO of an international consulting firm, CEBETS, that promotes East-West socio-cultural, economic, commercial, educational and security programs successfully since 1986.

College Counseling

I am semi-retired following 30+ years as a distinguished professor at many top (Penn, PSU, Drexel, Pittsburgh, Rutgers) universities and smaller colleges and private schools. My prior years in high-level government service enhanced my educational and natural qualifications to be recognized as an outstanding instructor in every milieu. Private tutoring has frequently supplemented my lecturing, research and writing. I have counseled students continuously, winning accolades, through classroom contacts, office hours, and career counseling center requests.

ESL/ESOL

Russian, Ukrainian, Polish, ESL, TOEFL, English, etc.

Film

What began more than 25 years ago as an abiding and passionate interest in Soviet/Russian film, soon evolved into university courses covering (through both films and lectures) the history of film (from the contributions by Edison and the French in the late 1800's to the advent of the short byopics, the classic silent films of Eisenstein [e.g. BATTLESHIP POTEMKIN] et al, to the modern era), focusing on the former USSR/Russia and Eastern Europe. Through film, a society's culture--and civilization--is thereby explored, experienced viscerally, and analyzed, often revealing insights overlooked or obscured by the more traditional political, economic and national security interpretations. My film courses became hugely successful at Rutgers and Penn State, inter alia, attracting significant numbers of non-matriculated students to the campuses specifically to enroll in these somewhat pioneering offerings.

Marketing

As detailed in a previous submission for Business qualifications, I have been a professor of marketing at Shippensburg, PSU-Harrisburg, and Rutgers, at both undergrad and MBA levels. Further, I have directed my own international consulting firm, including oversight for all marketing strategies employed, since the firm's founding in 1986.

Public Speaking

Eschewing false modesty, I was born with the gift of verbosity. I've served as an inspirational speaker, a keynote speaker dozens of times (recently at a NATO Conference in Bucharest, Romania), appeared on many news programs (television and radio, including Nightline and VOA), and delivered more speeches as President and CEO of my consulting firm than I could possibly recall. Nearly 30 years of lecturing in the university classroom came naturally; and the overwhelmingly effusive praise from both student evaluations and peer reviews corroborate this assessment.

Russian

I have taught Russian language at all levels at numerous colleges and universities (Penn State, Rutgers, Phila. U, U of Penn, Villanova U, among others). My education includes a BA, U of Pennsylvania, Russian & Pol Sci (dbl) & Pres. of Russian Club; MA, U of VA, Soviet Studies (lang. component) & President of Russian Club, Director Russia House; PhD, Columbia U, Pol Sci (Russian Institute Cert.). I'm a member of Dobroe Slovo, the Nat'l Slavic Honor Society; former Adviser to Presidents Gorbachev and Yeltsin, drafter of Russian Fed. Constitution (1991-2); and 35+ years of teaching experience at a dozen colleges, private and group tutoring, and several teaching awards for Russian. Finally, I served as a "covert operative" under the umbrella of the US Dept of State in the former USSR (1980s).

Social Studies

I earned a BA in political science (and Russian Studies) from Penn in 1981, an MA in Soviet Studies from Virginia and a second from Harvard in Ukrainian Studies, followed by a doctorate from Columbia in pol sci. I've taught (earning numerous commendations) in colleges & universities virtually all courses in the pol sci curriculum since 1986 (and served as a TA for years previous to that). I also served as a special adviser to President Reagan in the early 1980s while at a think tank, authoring the START II arms control treaty by contract with the Pentagon (the original of which is still in my possession).

Vocabulary

Subject qualifications are extensive and varied, ranging from multiple foreign languages, social sciences, English and literature, many test preparations, history, virtually all international issues (as a former diplomat, writer and professor), and myriad others. All are available upon request.
