About Barb

Hi! My name is Barb. I have been working with children for the past 10 years. In addition to tutoring, I coached a youth rock climbing team. I have learned a great deal while working with children ages 6 to 18. The two main things are patience and being flexible in your coaching style in order to accommodate all learning levels. I apply both of these strategies when tutoring. Not all children are visual learners and sometimes it takes patience to determine if a child is better with written or verbal practice. Often children are a combination of both depending on the subject. Therefore patience is extremely important when working one on one.

I have tutored a large number of different subjects: Test Prep (GRE, SAT, ACT, and nursing entrance exam) Chemistry I, Chemistry 105, Algebra I, Algebra II, Advanced Algebra II, College Level Algebra, Geometry, Bio 101, Anatomy and Physiology I, and all 6th thru 8th grade subjects. In addition, I have tutored a wide variety of age levels from 12 to 35. This includes students with ADHD and mild autism. Each student I have tutored has been different and unique and learned in a different way. Whether it is an at home online charter school for high school or taking advanced algebra online or a traditional classroom, I am able to adapt my tutoring style to each student. This is one of the advantages to tutoring as opposed to sitting in a classroom.

For ACT/SAT testing I have all of my students take a complete practice test in order to determine problem areas. From there I set up a schedule of sessions and practices tests until the exam. By taking an individual approach for each student I have been able to raise test scores over 200 points.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Math

I have tutored for the ACT and SAT math section multiple times over the past 5 years. I have found to first determine what the issue is with the math section. Sometimes it is hard for students to not used graphing calculators. Other times they don't understand the concept. If the have a hard time with the calculator, we just practice. If they have a hard time with the type of problems we work a bunch of examples until they are able to start getting most of the hard examples correct.

Algebra 1

I have tutored Algebra (all levels) multiple times over the past 5 years. I often find it is best to combine the notes from the teacher and examples from the book to come up with new problems to review. Some students are more visual and need to see the problem a couple of different ways until they understand it. Others are repetition and just need to repeat the type of problem until they can master it. I have a large number of math books available to me. This allow me to provide my own problems so students can still use the examples in the book for future studying.

Public Speaking

I have taken numerous public speaking classes in high school and college. I was also a member of the forensics team in high school and a judge in college. I am currently the main speaker for events at my current workplace.

Study Skills

I have tutored over 30 students in the past 5 years. This experience has taught me that people learn and retain knowledge in different ways. Also, my high school and college required study skills classes, which taught us a number of different ways to learn new material.

With these experiences, I have been able to help a large number of students improve on their grades and increase their self confidence.
