Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

I have taken multiple English courses at Kent State University, as English was my major.

ESL/ESOL

I spent my entire last year teaching English to kindergarteners in the Middle East.

Grammar

I have taken 2 courses on English grammar at my university, Kent State. One was an introduction course about parts of speech and making tree diagrams, and the other was an in-depth look at how to teach grammar to ESL students. It included parts of speech, how to use certain words in certain places, and how to explain the rules of grammar in a simplified way.

Literature

As an English major, I have spent a lot of time reading and discussing literature. I have taken a few courses specifically centered around literature.

Phonics

I have taken multiple courses on reading and specifically phonics at Kent State University. My major was Teaching English as a second language, so I am very aware of all the current phonics methods. I have also just finished student teaching, so I have had experience teaching.

Reading

I taught kindergarteners beginning reading skills for a year in the United Arab Emirates. Although most were only 5 years old, they picked up reading very quickly from my methods of hands on and interactive teaching. Reading should be taught through movement, song, games, and role play. I have successfully used these tools in order to help struggling readers succeed.
