Hello! I am a Ph.D. in History from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with years of experience teaching, tutoring, and advising at the college level, from UNC to the University of Basel in Switzerland. My training as a historian of modern Europe and Russia has required me to critically engage texts, use them to formulate and corroborate compelling arguments, and present my findings to larger audiences, both orally and in writing. These are crucial life-skills that I help my students to attain as well. I've also spent countless hours reading what other scholars have already written and immersing myself in other cultures, and strive to be a good resource for knowledge about the human past and the world beyond the borders of the USA. My academic interests range beyond history into the fields of philosophy, politics, literature, music, and art, all of which I like to incorporate into my work as an educator and a scholar.
Having spent over 7 years studying Russian -- including two summers of intensive study in St. Petersburg, Russia, and 10 months of living in Lviv and Kyiv, Ukraine, as a Fulbright scholar -- I possess near-native fluency in Russian and Ukrainian, and am well prepared to tutor beginner- and intermediate-level students in these languages.
I am an accomplished writer with publications in peer-reviewed academic journals and a book manuscript forthcoming from Harvard University Press. I enjoy helping students appreciate the power of the written word in their own lives. As a tutor and educator, my aim is to help students of history and related disciplines to organize their thoughts, craft strong thesis statements, and present their case clearly and logically on the page. I also facilitate the critical reading of different kinds of sources to help students uncover deeper layers of meaning, place them in their historical contexts, and appreciate the perspectives and intentions of their authors. Reading and writing can (and should) be fun and rewarding activities for every student.
