About Adria

I have worked as a Pittsburgh Public Schools teacher for over 31 years. My main course of teaching has been in reading, English, spelling and handwriting. For the majority of my career I have taught grades 3 and 4. In the beginning of my career I also taught grade 2 reading, English, spelling, math and handwriting. A few years ago, I had the pleasure of teaching grade 6 core curriculum in reading along with grade 4 reading. It was such an enjoyable experience!

I love teaching children and seeing their eyes sparkle when they learn. I encourage all of my students to read because this is something they will need to use all of their lives! Patience is a virtue and I have a lot of it!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADHD

I am qualified to teach ADD/ADHD students due to the fact that they have been in my classrooms for over a period of many years. I also have a degree in special education so it would also make me qualified for teaching these students as well as those with Aspergers and anything else that would fall under the umbrella of special education. I have at least 5-7 students in my classroom presently that have ADHD.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have a Master's Degree in Education plus 4 credits over that from Gannon University. I have been teaching for over 31 years in the Pittsburgh Public Schools. My major subjects that have been taught are reading, spelling, handwriting, grammar, English, phonics, and social studies, and I have subbed in science classes whenever necessary. I have given the PSSA test in science for the last 2 years as well. I have taught grades 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 over the course of my 31 years.

Study Skills

when I was employed for Pittsburgh Public Schools, I did after school tutoring for 6 years. During this time our program focused on teaching the students organizational and study skills to assist them in their everyday life for that school year.
