About Shelley

Hi there! I'm a Pittsburgh-based tutor with expertise in helping students academically in Economics-related academic subjects. I very much enjoy working with students of all levels to learn and achieve their academic goals. I'm a very patient tutor and I truly believe there is no such thing as a dumb question. I also recognize students have different learning styles and I tailor my tutoring methods to best fit their needs.

Economics tutoring: I believe thinking about Economics takes an adjustment in mindset - it can be very difficult to break down Economics-type questions without getting into this paradigm, which can be challenging in and of itself. I work with students patiently to see the world through the 'economics' lens and to break down seemingly complex economic problems into their component parts step-by-step, which is the key to succeeding with Economics coursework. Having worked as an Adjunct Professor of Economic Development and a Graduate Teaching Assistant for Intermediate Microeconomics, Macroeconomics and Applied Econometrics, I'm happy to tutor up to these level of courses at the high school, undergraduate and/or graduate-levels. I also have tutoring experience in Monetary and Trade Theory.

Available to tutor economics-related academic subjects:
High school: AP Microeconomics, AP Macroeconomics
Undergraduate/Graduate: Introduction to Economics, Intermediate Microeconomics, Intermediate Macroeconomics, Monetary Theory, Trade Theory, Econometrics, Applied Econometrics, Economic Development
Related economics-related standardized tests: AP Microeconomics, AP Macroeconomics

My academic/teaching background: I have 4 years of teaching experience - I taught as an Adjunct Professor of Economic Development at Seton Hall University and previously worked as a Graduate Teaching Assistant in Microeconomics, Macroeconomics and Econometrics at The Johns Hopkins University. Outside of tutoring, I have my Bachelor's Degree in Government from Harvard University and my Master's Degree in International Economics and International Relations from The Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS).

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Econometrics

I taught as a Graduate Teaching Assistant for an Applied Econometrics course as well as having taken both Econometrics and Applied Econometrics courses at the graduate-level in my master's studies at The Johns Hopkins University. Previously, I covered extensive econometric methods in a Quantitative Methods of Political Science in my undergraduate studies at Harvard University. I can provide transcripts substantiating this coursework, if desired.

Economics

I have taught six graduate-level Economics courses as a Teaching Assistant at The Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) including Microeconomics, Macroeconomics and Applied Econometrics. I have also tutored graduate students independently in International Trade Theory and International Monetary Theory. On the economic development side of things, I taught an Advanced Topics in Economic Development course at Seton Hall University as an Adjunct Professor.
