About Erica

I firmly believe that all students can learn when they feel comfortable and confident with their teacher, their environment, and most importantly, themselves. Establishing this comfort and confidence is the foundation of my tutoring relationships.

I love working with young people and would be honored to help you/your child achieve success. I am extremely patient and utilize creative strategies to help students achieve understanding and success. I specialize in time and stress management as well as establishing strong study skills, which transfer to college and beyond.

I have six years of English teaching experience and three years of experience teaching social studies and art. I possess PA teaching certification in secondary English 7-12. I have worked with students at every level between 7th and 12th grade in a variety of settings. I also have experience in private tutoring for SAT verbal and writing. I have worked extensively with 11th and 12th grade students in college and job counseling post high school.

I am also available for proofreading and revising essays, letters, resumes, etc.

Please feel free to email me with any questions or concerns you have about me or my tutoring services.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

English is my passion. I earned my Master's Degree in English Education and have been teaching secondary English literature for the past 6 years to students in grades 7-12. Like most English teachers, I love to read, but what I love even more is helping students cultivate their own love of literature. Through patience and encouragement, even the most reluctant readers can learn to dissect literature, analyze author's intentions, and build strong comprehension and analytical skills. I believe these essential English skills can be achieved through a variety of genres: from American and British classics to more contemporary fantasies and realistic fiction.

Grammar

English grammar is difficult for most students due to it's nuanced rules and inconsistencies. However, grammar proficiency can easily be achieved with steady practice and an understanding of why it's integral to writers' and readers' fluency. I have many exercises for building a strong foundation in grammar, most of which involve direct application.

Social Studies

I taught middle school level social studies for three years and have an inherent love for history. I believe social studies and history extend far beyond the memorization of dates and names. When taught creatively and through fascinating and true stories, social studies cannot only be accessible but it can also be as familiar and exciting as the history of our own lives.

Study Skills

I have worked with many students over my six years of teaching to establish practical and effective study and homework skills. With organization and practice, all students are able to make effective use of their time. I find that teaching students how to break down difficult or cumbersome tasks or concepts into smaller, more accessible parts is the key to building independence. By utilizing graphic organizers and other creative systems and structures, students are able to establish routines for engaging in difficult work, which helps minimize stress and anxiety, and ultimately helps them to find success in and out of the classroom.

Writing

I earned my Bachelor's Degree in English/Writing and simply could not live without my ability to write. Writing is absolutely fundamental in today's society. I always tell students that as they polish their writing skills, they are also enhancing their ability to be heard and understood in the world. Communication is the foundation for success in nearly every career. With practice and unique strategies, I have seen even the most reluctant students flourish and become self-proclaimed "writers."
