I am a graduate of California University and a former elementary and middle school teacher and the author of The Heart Is A Lonely Hunter and A Woman's Worth. Both have been well rather well received and I certainly enjoyed the brief bit of notoriety but my first love has always been teaching. It is also where I enjoyed my most success and I must admit that there is nothing more rewarding than motivating a child to reach his full potential academically.
In my first year teaching in a low income neighborhood in New York City I took twenty six fourth graders considered academically deficient to heights unknown and my class had the highest rate of growth on the end of the year standardized tests than any class in the school. But after several years there where I met with a rather unparalleled success rate I thought it time for a change for my family and relocated to the rather rural North Carolina landscape. One of the greatest accolades of my teaching career came here when my principal asked me to stand up at a teacher's meeting after school one day.
It was at this time that he introduced me and paid me one of the greatest compliments I'd received up until that point when he told his faculty to stop complaining about this student and that. "Mr. B. has a self-contained class with nothing but behavioral problems." (At the the time I had a BEH class, that is I was deemed a special education or BEH teacher. That is I taught children with behavioral and emotional handicaps.) He went on to say that he wished he could videotape his classes and use them as instructional videos for those teachers who claim they have discipline problems in the classroom.
In short I have always loved the challenge of teaching and taking a child from point A to B academically through love, caring, empathy and patience. To be able to teach and reach children is a blessing I have always acknowledged and I am blessed to still be able to lend a helping hand. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
