About Vanessa

Hello! I am an attorney living and working in Pittsburgh, and I would love to help you work on your writing, reading, or English.

To begin with the vital stats: I am from a small town in upstate New York, where I went to a public high school. I went to college at Colgate University, where I was a writing tutor and received a BA in Political Science. Then, I moved to San Francisco for three years and received my JD from UC Hastings College of the Law, a Tier 1 school, where I also worked as a teaching assistant for a Legal Writing and Research class.

My philosophy is that simple proofreading is not teaching. I have been trained to use students' drafts as teaching tools to help them become better writers, and that is what I hope to do for you; as hackneyed as it is, that old adage about giving a person a fish is truly my credo as a teacher. As a writing tutor at the Colgate University Writing Center, the news section editor and editor-in-chief of the Colgate Maroon-News, a teaching assistant for a first-year Legal Writing and Research course at my law school, and the note editor for the UC Hastings Communications and Entertainment Law Journal, I honed this skill to a fine point, applying it across many types of writing and with a broad variety of writers.

While the most important thing is being able to transmit my knowledge to you, I'm sure it will be reassuring to hear that I have plenty of knowledge to transmit. I have been passionate about reading and writing since before I started kindergarten, I received a perfect score on the English portion of my SATs (before writing was its own section), and I supplemented my Political Science course load at Colgate with many courses in literature and writing. I was also mentioned in the "Acknowledgments" section of The Nature of Rights at the American Founding and Beyond for my work as research assistant to the editor, Professor Barry Alan S., during my summers at Colgate University. As for my post-graduate work, of course, if there is one thing they teach you how to do in law school, it's to argue - both orally and on paper. I received an honorable mention for Best Brief in my Moot Court class, an A in every course I took that required a final paper (including an independent study), and a top student award in two of my four seminar courses. All of my summer employers during law school have indicated that my written argumentation and analysis are very clear and sharp.

Technical qualifications aside, I am very personable and easy to work with. The students I worked with at the writing center, the students whose notes I edited on the law journal, and the students in the course for which I was a teaching assistant frequently complimented me on my approachability (indeed, some were assigned to a different TA or note editor, but came to my office hours for help instead). I have also had a lot of experience working with people I have just met, between the pro bono clinic I worked at during law school and the three different district attorney's offices at which I have interned.

Please let me know if there is any other information I can provide to help you in choosing a tutor today. Thanks very much for taking the time to consider my services, and I look forward to working with you!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
