Graduate from the University of Pittsburgh (Mathematics)
California University of Pennsylvania (Graduate Coursework)
Hi! I'm Carolina. I moved to the greater Pittsburgh area five years ago. I have a B.S. in Math from University of Pittsburgh and am pursuing my Master's degree in secondary education from California University of Pennsylvania. For two and a half years, I worked in Florida as a tutor for a private prep school (grades 7-12), tutoring primarily in math, English, and SAT prep. Additionally, I taught a pre-calculus honors course while there, as well as held summer teaching positions as an SAT math teacher and an Algebra II teacher. I have also worked as a tutor in both math and reading for an SES-program with elementary school children and tutored several adult classmates in mathematics while in college. I currently tutor students in grades 5-10 in a variety of math subjects.
I believe that each student is a unique learner, so their needs vary. I like to work toward the goals and needs of the student by personalizing their instruction. For some students, a helping hand through homework is all that is necessary, but for others, re-instruction is needed so that the student can develop a strong foundation on which to build their education. I like to use manipulatives so students can have tactile experiences when doing math, and I like to use creative mnemonics to help students remember difficult content. Hi! I'm Carolina. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
