Lehigh University (Master's)
As a public high school science teacher with 30 years of experience (including grades 9-12, gifted through inclusion student), I have a wealth of knowledge and experience with learning and education. After retiring from a very successful teaching career (including a Big on line science competition win) I have been 'redefining' myself as a tutor finding great satisfaction working one on one or with small groups of students.
Some of my students (from college level through junior high school) come to me with failing grades and are discouraged with school, or they are proactive students with high expectations with specific goals in mind. Being the educator I love the challenge of helping students discover how they learn the best. Each student is unique and the brain is amazingly complex as to how it stores and retrieves information. Therefor each student that I work with is an interesting and unique challenge. The rewards of working one on one or in a small group setting and watching students grow and succeed is extremely satisfying. Since my retirement in 2009 I find that I have plenty of time to devote to my preparation for each tutoring session. This preparation would include- outlines, flashcards, visuals/diagrams/demonstrations, charts and online activities. And in some cases scientific experiments.
I have limited my list of certified subjects on this site to those subjects that I have expertise in- including (BIOLOGY, BOTANY, ZOOLOGY, PHYSIOLOGY, NURSING, ANATOMY and PSYCHOLOGY) in general LIFE SCIENCE SUBJECTS-on a middle school, high school and college level. Including mentoring students with SCIENCE FAIR projects, and adequate preparation to be proficient in the Keystone Biology Exam.
As a scientist I love to solve problems and as an educator with 30 years of experience I love working with youth. Combine these two passions and you have found a tutor that will solve your academic problems and the experience will be mutually enjoyable and rewarding! References available upon request. Barbara is truly amazing teacher!!! She does not just dive into material. She first grasps an understanding of the student needs and learning preferences. For example, my daughter is very visual, so Barbara gave her all necessary skills to create for herself visual learning material, such as flash cards with pictures and key words on one side and explanation on the other, finding and watching processes' animation and so on. Giving these incredible skills to the student allows student to work independently between the lessons and succeed! Barbara comes to the lesson very prepared so no time is waisted. Barbara explains and teaches material in a very clear and easy to grasp and remember way. After a single lesson my daughter progressed from 60s and low 70s to 85 for each of two very hard quizzes.
Thank you Barbara!!!
Barbara's teaching style is very clear and helpful. She Is extremely knowledgeable about the material and gave me great tips. I am looking forward to working with her again.
Barbara is helping our son prepare for his mid term exam. She reviewed macro-molecules and completed a chart to put a very large chapter into an easily understandable visual diagram. Barbara explains concepts easily and our son grasped them! He is a visual learner and the chart will help with studying. We can't wait for the next session.
Barbara is a very knowledgeable and caring tutor. She was well prepared on the areas my daughter needed help in.
She is a wonderful teacher/ tutor. What impressed me the most is that she prepared overnight for a lesson plan on how to attack anatomy. 5 star tutor.
I found Barb on WyzAnt and I was pleasantly surprised. Barb responded the same afternoon and understood the urgency of our situation. My daughter was in the 2nd week of a 7 week Certified Nursing Assistant program and was feeling overwhelmed. We meet with Barb the next day and she immediately put my daughter at ease after just one meeting. Barb was able to help my daughter get organized so that she could study for her exam as there was a lot of material that needed to be reviewed for the exam. My daughter just completed her 7 week course and came out with an A in the class and feeling confident that she will be able to pass the state exam in a couple of weeks. I attribute this to Barb's teaching style which she tailored to my daughter's needs as she has ADD and has a very difficult time studying and memorizing material. I highly recommend Barb.
Mrs. Barbara is an awesome tutor. My 10th grader enjoyed the lessons very much. He stated that the worksheets Mrs. Barbara gave him were very helpful. Our goal is not only achieving a good grade from school, but also receiving a 5 on the AP bio exam. Mrs. Barbara had obviously done a lot of preparation for each of our lessons. The info was relevant, and she also conducted a small hands-on experiment each time to enhance the understanding of concepts. With her help, my 10th grader is confident that he can excel in the AP bio course.
Barbara B. was the most amazing biology tutor for our daughter in 9th grade. She demonstrated unbelievable patience, skill, and ability to encourage and motivate. Barb taught our daughter study skills and techniques which she then applied to all of her classes. Her success in biology improved - and so did her performance in her other subjects!!! Barb tutored our daughter at the end of last year and this year our daughter started school with a new confidence and consistently refers to her positive experience with Barb and how she is applying these skills to all of her classes this year. We highly recommend Barbara B. as a biology tutor! Barb has such a thorough knowledge base of biology and the ability to empower her students with motivation, confidence and study skill techniques! We only wish we found Barb many months earlier!!! Barb prepared for each session with our daughter and every moment of the session was productive and helpful.
Barbara is by far the BEST teacher my son has EVER had! We love her! Thank you Barbara for an amazing year!!
Barbara is a great tutor for my daughter. She was struggling with the exams in her AP Bio class. We saw improvement over time, receiving her highest test grade on her most recent exam! I'd like to say it was a Christmas miracle, but it was really all the hard work done by both my daughter and Barbara. Barbara always reviews the material before my daughter arrives for the session and helps her with flashcards and notes. She even has her own text book. Most importantly she is always kind and pleasant and has helped her regain her confidence in this very challenging subject. Thank you Barbara, we are so glad we found you!!
Barbara has been a wonderful tutor for my son. She is very supportive and upbeat. My son has been struggling with biology and Barbara has shown him that it really is a very interesting subject.
Barbara had assisted my third year college nursing student in study for her class in Pediatrics. She worked with my daughter weekly for 1.5 hours for over a month. My daughter developed greater confidence in the learning material. Barbara assisted her in developing better study guides and prepared wonderful lessons each week on the material. My daughter is feeling much more prepared and has found her sessions with Barbara to be extremely worthwhile. She is a wonderful instructor.
My 10th grader just had her second tutoring session with Barbara for AP Biology and I can tell already that we are really lucky to have found her. Don't hesitate to call her, she is fantastic.
My daughter has some serious health issues that have made it necessary for her to be a cyber student. After two months of doing cyber school on her own, she was frustrated and despondent. We needed some tutoring help fast and were thrilled to find Barbara through WyzAnt. She lives close by and is a retired biology teacher from my daughter's school who shares her love of horses. Initially, my daughter's ability to do school work was erratic and unpredictable, resulting in some last minute cancellations of her tutoring sessions. Barbara was very gracious and understanding of her situation. She has been able to work with my daughter's mood and energy swings and gently guide and support her academic progress. Barbara came with us to meet the cyber teachers and quickly mastered the cyber learning environment. She is very enthusiastic about biology and makes learning about it fun. I am a biological scientist myself and have been very favorably impressed by the depth of her knowledge in this field. In addition to being a great biology teacher, Barbara has been very flexible and accommodating with scheduling her visits to our home. She is warm and personable and has an upbeat, can do attitude that helps lifts everyone's spirits. She supports my daughter emotionally as well as academically and is genuinely interested in her well being. In short, she is as close to perfect for this job as anyone could possibly be. My daughter would not be where she is now academically if she had not had Barbara's help. I feel very fortunate and grateful to have found such a gem of a tutor.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have a BS degree in biology and have taught in the field of biology, life science, and anatomy for 30 years in a public high school. Upon retiring from a very satisfying and successful career in public high school education I have really been enjoying tutoring students through the WyzAnt web site. I find it very rewarding to share my passion for science and learning with students in need.
After teaching biology for 30 years at the high school level, I have since retired and have been very much enjoying tutoring students in life science courses through the WyzAnt website. For more specific information concerning my credentials and references-please refer to my personal and professional profile located on the WyzAnt site.
In 2010 I had the pleasure of tutoring a sophomore student at Delaware Valley College in a course titled Botany. The course was all encompassing. There were 4 main exams and 4 lab practicals. The information covered was rapid and detailed. The topics included introduction to botany, diversity of the botanical world, the plant body and plant physiology. Each topic was broken down into many subtopics with a large amount of information to retain. The professor was very challenging and non-approachable. As a result this student sought my help as an outside resource.
Strategies that were employed were flashcards, charts, diagrams and on-line tutorials. These resources made it much easier for the student to prepare for the exams. My personal interaction with the student was important for the one on one interaction that the professor was unable to provide. She flourished in our sessions and grew in her knowledge of how she learned the best in order to retain such a large quantity of information necessary to be successful in the class. Beginning with a 30% this student ended the course with a 72% and an A on the final exam!
Our understanding of genetics dates back to the work of Gregor Mendel and his study of garden peas a century ago. Our current understanding of genetics includes Mendel's work with patterns of inheritance as well as meiosis and chromosomes, how genes are encoded, how genes are expressed, genetic change (mutations) and modern methods of gene technology. I have taught genetics on the honors ninth grade level, for a pharmacology entrance exam and in a high school Advanced placement course. I have a wealth of experience in this area and really enjoy teaching/tutoring in this exciting field of study
When I was in college as an undergraduate student at Dickinson College in Carlisle Pa. one of the most challenging courses that I had to complete was zoology. My love for the subject of biology (my major) and my passion for animals had me instantly interested in the content of the course. The professor was wonderful and the labs (dissections) were amazing. During the duration of this course I truly learned 'how to study'. I was pushed to a new level of understanding concerning how I 'learned the best'. And as a result I was able to develop strategies that helped me to retain such large amounts of comparative information (necessary to be successful in the course).
The students that I have tutored from Temple school of Nursing and Delaware Valley Community College, as well as junior and senior high school students all are at this 'same place' in their academic experience. How do they learn the best? What strategies work well for them? How can they be successfully in the most challenging of courses?
With 30 years of experience as a high school science teacher I can help you with these answers. Every individual is unique and so is how the brain functions and how one learns and retains information. I look forward to the challenge of helping you in life science related courses-to be successful and enjoy the experience.
