About MaryAnn

Before teaching math and grammar in the elementary and middle school grades, I was a professional musician for 25 years. Performing and teaching music was my life until my children needed help getting through their homework. Neighbors and friends needed support too and before long I was teaching in local co-ops and home school programs. Now, 19 years later, I still find that opening the mind of my students to the love of learning is as invigorating as the stage.

I have a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Music with an emphasis on Harp Performance. Because math and music have similar logical patterns, my work with children in math has always included musical concepts. Relating the two subjects is interesting and aides with memory work. My experience includes teaching multiple pre-K through pre-algebra math in the small class setting as well as teaching one-on-one to both the advanced and challenged student.

Teaching grammar, reading, and writing is a true passion of mine. I have taught children pre-K through the 8th grade. I have used the Shirley Grammar, Explode the Code, Easy Grammar, Institute for Excellence in Writing, and the Voyages in English series with great success. All of these resources include outlining and writing practice for student success in writing and public speaking.

I am eager to help the student achieve to their potential. Training the mind to enjoy learning and gain confidence is key and brings me great joy. Please contact me with any questions or scheduling needs. I check in regularly and can respond quickly.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Ear Training

I earned a Bachelor of Music degree from the Cleveland Institute of Music in Harp Performance. Music Theory and Ear Training, Composition and Music History are all fundamental parts of the study of music. Over the past 19 years I've taught these elements of music in privately operated schools, camps, and homes.

Elementary Math

Home Education is the path I have chosen for my 5 children from pre-K to their high school years. With other homeschooling families in Delaware and Chester Counties, I have provided classroom lessons in elementary math, language arts, and music enrichment. Currently providing remedial support through the 10th grade.

Grammar

Home Education is the path I have chosen for my 5 children from pre-K to their high school years. With other homeschooling families in Delaware, Montgomery and Chester Counties, I have provided classroom lessons in elementary math, language arts, and music enrichment. Currently providing remedial support in grammar with success through the 10th grade.

Handwriting

Home educating my 5 children has given me the opportunity to teach writing from the start. Since they've grown, I've been inspiring students to find their printing and cursive style with success by paying attention to such basics as good posture and a relaxed hand. To eliminate the tedious task of learning to write well I have the beginner student make a printing notebook with pictures and the older student a cursive journal of favorite quotes and poems. The students are proud of their work and seem to enjoy the pain-free process!

Harp

I studied with Alice Chalifoux and received a Bachelor of Music degree from the Cleveland Institute of Music. I taught at the Settlement Music School for 10 years, was President of the Phila. Chapter of the American Harp Society for 5 years, and have performed throughout the Phila. region in orchestras and ensembles over 25 years.

Homeschool

Home Education is the path I have chosen for my 5 children from pre-K to their highschool years. With other homeschooling families in Delaware and Chester Counties, I have provided classroom lessons in elementary math, language arts, and music enrichment. Currently providing remedial support through the 10th grade.

Music Theory

Music Theory is to music as grammar is to language. However you enjoy music, the study of music theory helps you understand and use it more. The study of music theory is logical and full of patterns that also helps with the study of math! As a professional musician I have taught theory during my music lessons in my privately maintained studio, at the Settlement Music School, and in co-op classes in Chester, Montgomery, and Delaware Counties.

Reading

I am a trained and experienced teacher in the Spalding Method which has a strong foundation in phonograms and utilizes the Ayres' diagnostic spelling list to pinpoint specific weaknesses. I have success working with students well beneath their grade level. I am flexible and willing to use the program of your choice.

Sight Singing

Sight-singing gives the music-reading vocalist and instrumentalist the advantage of understanding how the music sounds before hearing it! This is an important skill especially for sight-reading portions of auditions. I am a professional musician with a degree in music performance. I have taught at the Settlement Music School for 10 years and in local, privately operated co-ops in Montgomery, Chester, and Delaware Counties.

Special Needs

Our home business of 25 years has created both software and hardware that gives accessibility to the Blind or Visually Impaired student. If you want to play in the school band or sing in the choir we can train you to use the music screen that enlarges the print music score or teach you Braille Music. My experience with the Blind and Visually Impaired includes working in international conferences and music camps. I can provide lessons in my home where the studio was created by my husband who is totally blind.
