About Cathy

I have taught Special Education at the elementary level, middle school level and the high school, and post high school level. I taught for 12 years. My teaching position required a lot of small group work and one on one work so I feel confident with tutoring. I love working one on one with students or small groups because it allows you to get to know and use the strengths of that student as well as working on the specific weaknesses. Tutoring also allows for a relationship between the teacher and student that is otherwise not possible with large group instruction.

I received my Master's degree in literacy and my certification as a reading specialist in 2013. The program I worked with at West Chester University used the tutoring experience as a cornerstone of their program and I greatly enjoyed that experience. I am especially comfortable with doing assessments if that is needed.

I received my English as a Second Language in New York City. I like to employ my children and adult literature into my instruction in esl. I have over 300 children's books to use.

The program I worked with at West Chester University did an excellent job at teaching their students the best ways to teach phonics, by real reading and by word study. While teaching, teaching phonics was an integral part of the lesson plans.

My biggest strength is my belief that the relationship between student and teacher is an important one. I strive to really get to know the student and their family to provide what it the student and family desires most from the experience.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

My kid is looking forward to having her back!

Cathy reviewed what type of books and how my daughter likes to read. We are in the process of determining the best plan to get her more engaged in reading and help with comprehension. Ultimately, her reading is impacting her math, because many of the math problems she is missing has to do with comprehension. I feel confident that working together Cathy/Teacher/Parent/Student...we can figure out
