Andy took his first class in music theory when he was 7 years old, and has loved it ever since. Through private lessons on guitar and piano, an ear training and sight singing after-school club in high school, a high school independent study music theory class, a Bachelor's degree program in Music Theory and Composition, and time spent reading music theory text books after college, he has gained a significant depth of knowledge of music theory.

Andy has experience tutoring other students in music theory in college, running a music theory club for high school students, and tutoring students in music theory one-on-one after college. He is fascinated by all of the details and possibilities of rhythm, melody, harmony, and form, and loves opportunities to share his passion with others. When tutoring a student, he likes to explain the context surrounding a particular rhythmic, melodic, harmonic, or form-related topic, so that the student will be able to understand not only how something works, but also how it came to be that way.

Ear Training,

Ear Training

As a music major in college, I studied Ear Training for four semesters and did well enough in those classes that my professor asked me to tutor another student in Ear Training. I also gave Ear Training lessons in a Music Theory club I started and ran for high school students after I graduated from college.
Sight Singing,

Sight Singing

As a music major in college, I studied Sight Singing for four semesters. I used my Sight Singing skills regularly through seven semesters of singing in one of the college choirs, and I gave Sight Singing lessons in a Music Theory club I started and ran for high school students after I graduated from college.

Best Music Theory teacher

Andy is a wonderful and thoughtful tutor. He is very patient with my son and encourages him to go further in exploring music theory - in depth. Thank-you so so much Andy for your kindness and patience. I greatly recommend Andy to anyone interested in Music Theory.

Intelligent and patient tutor

Andy was really good and helped my daughter learn with patience. His knowledge and patience is admirable. I have tried many tutors but I am sticking with Andy because of his patience.

Good music theory resource, may come back as needed.

I am a 30 year old with no musical training until the last few months. I set up a few lessons with Andy to improve my ear and musical "sense"after some lessons with other teachers that didn't provide what I was looking for or didn't go as planned. I got a much better sense of how all the different concepts I already tangentially knew of came together. Whereas I started with Andy with a desire to compose my own songs on piano but little sense of how I'd actually get to that skill level, I now feel it will be attainable with practice and greater mastery of the concepts and skills we reviewed. I would recommend Andy for any motivated and curious beginner with a desire to grow their skills but a lack of clarity on what exactly to work on.

Knowledgeable and patient tutor

Andy made me feel really comfortable as a student. We went through some basic sight singing and rhythm exercises to get an idea of where I was in my learning. He is extremely knowledgeable and patient. By the end of our first lesson I was able to start sight singing a few simple melodies and counting some basic rhythms. I am glad I have decided to get a tutor. I’m excited to see the progression of sight singing and theory skills over the next few months.
