Bio

Hi, I'm Matthew! I am a Penn State senior studying Biomedical Engineering with a focus in biochemistry. Over the past few years, I have become an expert in biology, chemistry, and mathematics through my coursework for a Bachelor's in Science degree. Hi, I'm Matthew! I am a Penn State senior studying Biomedical Engineering with a focus in biochemistry. Over the past few years, I have become an expert in biology, chemistry, and mathematics through my coursework for a Bachelor's in Science degree. I've had lots of specific experiences tutoring other students (ages 14-18) in pre-calculus, biology, and introduction science classes in high school, and I continued my tutoring in college for students (ages 18-22) working as a teaching assistant for courses such as Bio-thermodynamics. For this course, I held office hours twice a week for an hour where students came to ask questions about the homework, exam preparation, and overall topic learning.

I have shaped my personal approach to tutoring based on the environments that I learn best - where the professor is passionate about the material. I take these observations and apply them to when I work with students of all ages; I feel that tutoring the material that I enjoy the most will help other students benefit as much as possible. Additionally, I try to split up my tutoring sessions into two main parts. The first part is walking through the material to gain a more qualitative understanding, and the second part is applying the principles to example problems to reinforce the subjects. I feel that this way, every student has a more holistic understanding to the problem and on test day, can apply the skills to any problem they are given.

Another great experience that I have had over the past year is mentoring an undergraduate student in a research laboratory. Here, I've taught him various research skills and protocols in the field of biomedical engineering where we apply class material to real-life examples. This has given me a lot of experience with solidifying course material concepts, as well as teaching information in more than one way so that someone can learn each detail.
