Bio

I am a six-year veteran teacher with a track record of student success in the midst of an enjoyable year seven, and I have loved every year of it. Every year has brought success to my students. During the 2016-2017 school year, my group of students that had seen a pass rate of just over 50 percent on their state Reading tests during the 2015-2016 school year flourished and enjoyed a pass rate closer to 70 percent. Six of my students who passed that test had never done so before. Two of those students did not speak English as a first language.

Bringing students success and building a rapport with the students is what draws me to the profession. Over those six years, I have relished building those relationships and pushing my students to success. I have also tutored students both as part of my teaching duties and on a volunteer basis during my career. In those six years, I have brought dedication to the students, creativity, and a sense of humor that keeps students engaged in class.

I believe in individual lessons tailored to the needs and interests of the student. Is a One Direction fan having trouble with grammar? The lesson will involve One Direction lyrics. Is a Star Wars fan having trouble with run-on sentences? The lesson will involve making Star Wars quotes into complete sentences. Student engagement is critical, and tailoring lessons to students' interests works wonders.

Proofreading

As an English Language Arts teacher, I help my students gain mastery in properly spelling, capitalizing, punctuating, and structuring the sentences in their written work. My students will tell you that I am very picky pertaining to punctuation, spelling, and grammar. I am, and for good reason; no one will take the kids seriously if they cannot master the rules of English grammar and spelling. When they learn this, their ideas become much more powerful.

Reading

Reading

Reading is the most important passion I could have. It is crucial for students to attain the ability to parse words critically and to think about what the words both say and imply. In my classes, my students learn how to do just that; additionally, they learn how to answer an open-ended question by finding evidence from the text and explaining why that evidence matters. The ability to read critically and think critically about what students read is a skill I hope to bring to all students.

SAT Reading

A solid grasp of reading skills translates well to the SAT Reading, and as an English Language Arts Teacher, I am well-versed in teaching my students how to read passages to answer certain question. My students take standardized tests in English Language Arts every year in order to give the state a snapshot of student progress, and the skills assessed on those state tests are very similar to the reading skills on the SAT. For instance, author's purpose is a skill assessed both by state tests and the SAT. Because my students are well-prepared in mastering their reading skills, they will be well-prepared in taking their SATs.

In my class, the students grasp the concepts of using the written word as a way to get their message across using good structure, word choice, evidence, and explanation. Writing remains one of the most powerful tools for convincing strangers of one's ideas, and my job is to show students how to do that. How do they know that their writing gets stronger? Ask them to look at their writing at the beginning of the year versus the end of the year.

American History

As a Social Studies teacher, I am trained the delivery of content in American History. Not only that, American History is a hobby of mine; I watch Ken Burns documentaries as a way to relax and learn. American History is particularly fascinating because so much happened in so little time, at least in terms of world history. It would be my pleasure to impart my knowledge and passion among students.
