About Sara

*I am currently only taking students online or at my location.*

I've been teaching private students in Music Theory and Piano for 6 years. Having grown up around music, I understand the importance of learning to enjoy the experience of playing an instrument, or composing. My teaching style is supportive rather than strict. While I expect my students to reach new heights, I use positive reinforcement and games to get them there. I also have my students use their new skills in practical ways from the very beginning.

I started studying German in 2006, and have continued studying since. In 2010-11 I was a student teacher at a Saturday School for German children. That summer, I went on an exchange program to Ulm in southern Germany for a month to really experience the culture there.

Nowadays, I frequently host German travelers who visit Philadelphia, and act as their tour-guide in exchange for speaking German with me. I'm passionate about conversational skills, and frequently read books in German like Harry Potter and the Hunger Games.

I work as a harpist and have been playing the instrument in a variety of venues. While I am trained classically and play with an orchestra, I also play harp in a jazz band, and record music as a singer/songwriter.

In college I studied Music Theory, and took a great deal of Music Therapy classes as well. My childhood was seeped in piano and music theory lessons. Because my upbringing was very classical, and my professional life is very modern, I like to mix both worlds for my students. We'll learn Chopin, but also chord theory.

Let me know what your goals are! I know language and music can be intimidating subjects, but let's break it down together. I'll help you know where to start. Can't wait to hear from you.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Ear Training

I have passed the AP Music Theory exam which contains an aural theory section. I also continued training in college theory classes at Temple University's Boyer College of Music. I can sightread music when given a starting pitch, and can write sheet music based on hearing it.

General Music

I work professionally as a Harpist in classical, modern, and compositional applications. I studied classically at Temple University's Boyer College of Music, and nowadays I use my knowledge in the Bryn Athyn Orchestra, a jazz band, and writing songs and samples for other artists and producers. I understand what it means to make your own opportunities as a musician.

Harp

I have been studying the harp for 6 years and attended the Young Artist's Harp Seminar in 2013. In college, I even attended master classes with Elizabeth Hainen, the Harpist for the Philadelphia Orchestra. I currently perform professionally at weddings, funerals, corporate events, and in the Bryn Athyn Orchestra.

Piano

I started studying piano at Settlement Music School and continued studying through Temple University's Boyer College of Music. I have been teaching private lessons to students of all ages for 4 years. I like to incorporate music theory in my piano lessons so that my students have a strong base to grow from.
