About Spencer

I have an extensive teaching background in the mathematics, sciences, and Spanish. At Harvard, I served as the head teaching fellow of the largest physics courses on campus (overseeing the learning of over 400 students over 6 semesters), tutored in statistics, biology, and general and organic chemistry, and taught CPR/First Aid/AED and BLS for the American Red Cross.

Before Harvard, at J.R. Masterman High School, I tutored peers in Calculus, Pre-Calculus, Spanish, Biology, Chemistry, and Geometry.

Graduating from Harvard University summa cum laude with a bachelor's in Chemistry, I am going on to study education and global health at Oxford University as a 2017 U.S. Rhodes Scholar.

After finishing my time at Oxford, I'll be going on to get an MD at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. Ultimately, I plan to intertwine my love for education with treating low-income and under-served populations as a primary care physician.

I would love to help you learn in any way that I can! From Faraday's law to stoichiometry, from mastering the subjunctive to preparing college essays, you can count on me to get you where you want to be with your educational goals.

Please note that I will be unable to provide tutoring services beginning in late September 2017, as I will have moved to Oxford, UK.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Calculus

I have an extensive background in mathematics. I've taken all of the prerequisite courses as well as both AP Calculus BC (in high school) and Multivariable Calculus (also known as Calc III, at Harvard). In addition to succeeding in these courses, I also have tutored in mathematics and taught in physics at Harvard for the past 3 years.

Chemistry

I've taken all of the college chemistry you could ask for: general chemistry, inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, and physical chemistry. I graduated summa cum laude in Chemistry from Harvard in May 2017, and I have extensive experience tutoring general and organic chemistry.

College Counseling

I am the first in my family to go to college. I graduated summa cum laude from Harvard University, won the Rhodes Scholarship, and am going on to medical school at Columbia University after studying for two years at Oxford. I have advised pre-medical students on how to apply to medical school, have taught physics and chemistry students, and have served as a high school adviser for dozens of students during my time at Harvard. I have a wide breadth of application experience and knowledge.

MCAT

I scored a 518 on the MCAT last year, placing me in the 97th percentile. My Chem/Phys score was 129 (93rd percentile), my Bio score was 131 (99th percentile), my CARS score was 130 (98th percentile), and my Psych/Soc score was 128 (86th percentile). This score is above the median matriculant MCAT for nearly every medical school in the country. I also have extensive experience teaching physics, biology, and chemistry, three of the most important topics on the MCAT.

Organic Chemistry

I graduated with a 3.97 GPA in Chemistry from Harvard University, culminating in summa cum laude honors. I have served on the teaching staff for chemistry courses at Harvard while also tutoring for two semesters in organic chemistry.

Physics

I have had the privilege of overseeing Harvard's largest physics course for the last three years. From teaching Newton's laws to the work-kinetic energy theorem, from Bernoulli's equation to Faraday's law, I have extensive experiencing in teaching physics to beginners and intermediate level students alike!

SAT Reading

I scored in the 97th percentile on the MCAT critical analysis and reading skills section (CARS). The MCAT is the graduate entrance exam for medical students, and its style of reading comprehension is incredibly similar to that of the SAT/ACT.
