In addition to having the credentials needed in order to be a knowledgeable tutor, I have posses a number of skills and qualities that make the difference between a good tutor and an excellent tutor. I am very personable, and am able to to put those I am tutoring at ease and create a learning environment that make students at ease and receptive to the concepts we are studying.
Additionally, I am able to communicate the concepts a student is challenged by in a way that makes the difficult easy, and to give students the confidence and skills needed to master the subject we are studying. The skills and confidence students acquire as a result of studying with me result in the student experiencing increased learning and success in the tests they take in the classroom.
I was an A student in Mathematics in both high school and at the University level (I have a Master's degree in Mathematics/Education). I have tutored many students in mathematics, and have been greatly rewarded by the success of my students.
I have a Bachelor of Arts in Accounting, and did all of the Accounting and Bookkeeping for a business I owned. I also taught Accounting at a business school in Philadelphia. Many students find Accounting confusing because it is not related to the subjects one studies in the earlier grades in school - its newness can be threatening. I have had much success enabling students to overcome the obstacles they encounter in learning Accounting and to succeed in the subject.
I teach classical and folk guitar. I am able to teach guitar students how to read sheet music, keyboard theory, and the finger picking style of playing the guitar.
I enjoy teaching and tutoring, and am able to make learning an enjoyable experience. My success as a tutor is measured by the success of my students and, based on that measure of success, I do believe that I am a successful tutor. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have been playing the guitar for many years. I studied classical guitar with a concert level guitarist, and as a result of his teaching and many hours of practice, I developed sufficient skill in the guitar to play upper level classic music written by such composers as Fernando Sor and Mauro Giuliani, as well as classical music written originally for other instruments and transcribed for the guitar by Guitar by Andres Segovia. I also have a number of years of experience playing folk music on the guitar. I am able to teach students guitar technique, how to read sheet music, and music theory.
