About Adrienne

I am a PhD student in the Classical Studies department at the University of Pennsylvania, where I have experience teaching the two-semester introductory Latin sequence to undergraduate students. In addition, I tutored Latin and writing for three years while I was pursuing my B.A. I also received a MSt in Greek and/or Latin Languages and Literature from Oxford University.

I am available to tutor students who are currently taking Latin or Greek classes at the middle school, high school, or college level. I am also interested in teaching the languages from scratch to home school students, hobbyists, etc.

I'm invested in Latin and Greek languages and literature and sharing them with others; I count Classics pedagogy (approaches to teaching Latin and Greek languages and culture) among my research interests as well as my personal interests. I am committed to learning about new ways that other educators have framed familiar material, and I enjoy the process of choosing and adapting these methods to suit the needs of individual students. Together, the student and I will create study plans, drills, memorization aids (songs, rhymes, mnemonics, games, etc.), and other techniques tailored to his or her strengths, weaknesses, and learning style. This process not only equips students with the tools necessary to master the material at hand, but also helps them develop their own independent study habits; I aim to employ methods that help students grow not just as readers of ancient languages, but as learners and thinkers more broadly. I have a lot of fun with this material and with teaching in general, and I look forward to working with new students!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Greek

I have considerable academic experience in Greek. I received a B.A. in Classics where I wrote an honors thesis on Homer (summa cum laude). In my Master's from Oxford University my three course options all focused on Greek (papyrology, early Greek hexameter poetry, and a thesis on Homer). I have also taken a number of graduate seminars in ancient Greek during my time as a PhD student at the University of Pennsylvania; in these courses I have been responsible for demonstrating competency at reading both prose and poetry in a variety of genres. My research interests center around Greek poetry (particularly Homer and the reception of Homer by later Greek poets) and around Classics pedagogy (approaches to teaching Latin and Greek).

My teaching and tutoring background is with Latin rather than Greek (Latin is a much more in-demand language!) but I am eager to broaden my experience and work with students in either language.

Latin

Although I am new to Wyzant, I have three years of tutoring experience in Latin in addition to one year of teaching. I am currently pursuing a PhD in Classics after receiving a Bachelor’s and Master’s in the subject.

Adrienne is a good tutor — We finished up Chapters 9, which was also quite fun. And that day was cold lol. I am looking forward to the coming lessons ...
