About Vipinjeet

I have been tutoring professionally for 3 years. I have helped many students achieve their MCAT and course goals. All classes and tests ideally want you to gain fundamental understanding of the topics, and I aim for nothing less.

Let's put it this way: I can train you to solve problems, but if that is all I do and if you get asked the same concept a different way, you will be at a loss, and I will not have served you well. But if we do the hard work of earning you the ability to casually toss off laser-precise statements in everyday, spoken English about the scientific concepts, then nothing and nobody can take that knowledge from you, not even when you are sleep-deprived, jittery from hypercaffeination and stressed to the gills taking a test.

That is why I have perfected a system of "speaking" science. The following simple test is sensitive to see whether you need my help: Answer the question, "What is Energy?" without using the word "Work" and without regurgitating an equation. If you can do it, and feel 100%, unshakably confident in your answer, congratulations. If, like most people, you aren't, then you haven't simultaneously sharpened and simplified your mental model of the Universe. That is my specialty.

All science stems from the laws of Thermodynamics, and while not every student needs the breadth of an MCAT review, I have already developed whiteboard slides and lessons plans on every high note in the undergraduate scientific canon from Newton to childhood development. When necessary, I pull those slides for the benefit of students I am tutoring in undergraduate courses as well.

What makes me your best choice for science tutoring? Empathy, and Laser-sharp understanding of the material. By listening to you speak and answer questions, I can diagnose where the block in your conceptual or algorithmic understanding is. I have never stopped adding on to my understanding of science and integrating complex material back down to the fundamentals, even when I used to be a surgical resident, jokingly known around the wards as "the teachingest resident." I loved every science class I ever took, and it is my life mission to infect you with my passion for understanding this material as a chord of as few notes as possible.

What can I offer you for the MCAT that others cannot? I have practiced medicine as a surgical resident. I know what science you need to know and why you need to know it. I have taught MCAT primarily for 3 years, and I have developed focused material that, while broad, is primarily deep in the level of understanding it confers. I also excise bad learning and test-taking habits from you, training you like a decathlete: plenty of time in the gym (simple problems), practicing the event (MCAT-style problems), and coaching you on your form: how you should think about the topic (like the test makers) and how to reduce your error rate when under the gun (as you will be on test day). What you practice is what you will do on the test, and I will train you to crush this test and leave it in your wake.

If my excitement and energy about this material sounds exciting to you, contact me and we can start turning you in a science juggernaut.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Biology

Having earned a medical degree, I view all doctors as applied biologists. Far from lagging in the rear anymore behind Physics and Chemistry, in the last 30 years Biology has gone from Ugly Duckling to Swan Princess. Be the belle of the Bio Ball yourself and learn why Bio is the crown jewel of science, integrating all the other scientific principles, because that's what Life does in its pursuit of Energy. Contact me and hopefully I can infect you with my enthusiasm for biomedical sciences of all flavors.

Chemistry

Chemistry, after the bit about atoms and the periodic table, is about the way electrons move to "get more comfortable." Whatever level of chemistry you are taking, from grade-school to college, I can help you understand things as simply as that. Chemistry is a subject that many people find hard because their teachers forget how to keep things simple, which is my specialty. Contact me and I can provide the clarity that has been lacking in your prior instruction.

MCAT

I have gone through medical school and part of residency as a surgeon. I have since taught MCAT for Kaplan, then contracted for years with Varsity Tutors. I got a 40 on the old MCAT (mean 30, max 45, 99.4th percentile), and have since gotten 99th percentiles on the USMLE Steps 1 and 2.
College: Columbia College of Columbia U. (NYC)
Med School: St. George's University. [student tutor during]
Methods: I have developed the best possible way to convey the science and reasoning material of the MCAT for those who want to smash the test, or those who just want to pass over years. I used all types of resources as appropriate, and emphasize the techniques necessary for the practice of recalling this knowledge under field conditions.

Contact me and let's turn you into a MCAT-destroyer.

Physics

I have taught Physics to MCAT and college-level students for 3 years, and have distilled it down to the most informative aspects, which can be yours if you contact me. All the mysteries of the universe. All the math that underpins them, for the low-low price of some skull sweat.

Precalculus

I am a math nerd, pure and simple. Perhaps my first tutoring job was taking the near-nightly calls from my buddy Adam growing up asking for help with his math homework. I believe science is the means of understanding the infinitudes of creation, and mathematics is the language of the cosmos. Many teachers impress symbolic manipulation without a conceptual framework to give weight to the exercise. Diagnosing cognitive blocks in mathematics can be tricky, depending on how long a student has had difficulty with math and at which level it began, but the good news is that every high schooler is capable of Precalculus, it just takes more time to undo bad learning the longer it has persisted.
