About Harry

My background with languages come from my studies as well as my travels. I first learned Hebrew from the age of 5-14 at a Jewish elementary school. I had forgotten most of it by the time I was older, until I spent a gap year in Jerusalem between high school and college and achieved fluency through the immersive experience. During this same time, I met many Arabic speakers and this sparked my first interest in learning the language. I went on to take Modern Standard Arabic (as well as some Hebrew courses) every year of my time at Wesleyan University, eventually reaching the advanced level. I earned a reputation among my classmates for making great study guides and being a helpful tutor.

While living in Jerusalem, I volunteered as an assistant English teacher for Palestinian Bedouin children aged 5-12 and tutored several other teenagers. A few years later, I lived and studied in Rabat, Morocco as part of the Amideast Summer Intensive Arabic Program. There I had the chance to study not just standard written Arabic, but also Moroccan Darija Dialect.

Outside of the class, I have used my Arabic skills while working with refugees in the New Haven, CT area and on an Arabic-language music show that I used to have on WESU FM. I currently volunteer at an afterschool program for refugee children run by HIAS PA in NE Philadelphia where I provide homework and ESL support.

I am an excellent tutor because I love to incorporate different forms of media such as music, film, and poetry into lessons and homework. This is one of the most fun and natural ways to learn a language! Through these media and independent study I have reached an intermediate proficiency in Levantine and Moroccan dialects.

If you want to learn the boring old way with just a textbook and somebody lecturing you then I might not be the best tutor for you. But, if you want to learn in a more natural and fun multimedia environment involving music, video clips, art, culture, and online games/language services like Duolingo or Mango Languages then I encourage you to contact me and begin/continue your linguistic journey.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Arabic

I spent around 3 years of college studying Modern Standard Arabic. I was one of the top students in my class. I also studied in Rabat, Morocco for 2 months on the Amideast intensive summer Arabic program.

Guitar

I have been playing guitar for 10+ years including 6 years of lessons. I have been in several bands and played in jazz orchestras and quintets. I can play jazz, rock, country, folk, blues, punk, metal, funk, and pretty much any style.

Hebrew

I first learned Hebrew at Jewish day school from ages 5 to 14. I perfected it during a gap year spent in Jerusalem where I took Hebrew Ulpan classes (Hebrew courses for new immigrants to Israel). I also had the opportunity to take Advanced Hebrew courses at Wesleyan University including Hebrew Literature.

Music Production

I have experience producing music with Ableton Live, Propellerhead Reason, Garageband. ACID Music Studio, Soundforge, and Audacity. I also know how to set up and operate hardware such as samplers, MIDI keyboards/controllers, mixers, effects, and analog equipment.

Piano

I took classical lessons as a child and then jazz lessons as a teenager.

Political Science

I majored in Government at Wesleyan University (class of 2016) with a concentration in comparative politics. My specialty is the Middle East and North Africa region (I also have a certificate in Middle Eastern Studies).

SAS

I took a statistics class called Applied Data Analysis at Wesleyan University. Throughout the semester we had to use SAS programming for a data-based research project of our choosing.

Songwriting

I have been in several bands and have written 3 albums of songs over the years.
