About Mickey

Pittsburgh born and raised, I started writing screenplays when I was 16 years old, which soon developed into studying film directing at the University of Pittsburgh. While there, I learned how to edit with Adobe Premiere Pro and Final Cut Pro and shot several short films, the last of which was accepted into four film festivals in 2010.

I have been teaching students how to shoot and edit films since 2008 when I was granted an internship at Pittsburgh Filmmakers. The first time I taught a class on how to use equipment as well as how to edit, the students I was instructing told me after the lesson how utterly enthusiastic and thorough I was about teaching -- that I seemed to genuinely care that the students were receiving all they could from me.

My approach to teaching in this way continued when I went to grad school and was tasked with teaching introductory filmmaking and editing to 50 students a semester. Part of the reason I teach this way is because I often felt that teachers I had encountered during my time in school did not do their best, and I felt that if students are paying me to learn, they deserve to get everything I can give them.

I have been writing, directing and editing films for 10+ years. I have made over a dozen short films, the most recent of which has been accepted in 7 film festivals so far with 1 award win and 2 nominations (including Best PA Filmmaker). I also have a BA and MFA in Film Production.

I have been playing drumset for 18+ years, and made a career out of playing in showbands and jazz trios on cruise ships.

I have taught video production and editing at Pittsburgh Filmmakers, Temple University, and CruiseCritic.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
